지난 10월 2일(월) 보스턴 총영사관이 주최하는 개천절 행사가 작년에 이어 올해도 Boston University Metcalf Trustee Center에서 개최되었다. 이번 행사에는 보스턴 총영사관 주재 외교관, 매사추세츠주 및 연방 하원 의원, 한국전참전용사, 주정부 관계자 등 200여명이 참석하였다.
행사는 오후 6시를 넘어서 시작되었고 뉴햄프셔 엑시터 고등학교(Exeter High School)에 재학중인 애니 고먼(Annie Gorman) 양이 애국가와 미국 국가를 부르면서 막을 올렸다. 행사 시작 전, 고먼 양은 “긴장이 되긴 하지만 제가 여기에 초대받은 것을 매우 영광스럽게 생각한다” 면서 이번 행사에서 한국에 대해 많은 것을 배우고 다양한 사람들을 만날 수 있게 되어 기쁘다고 말했다.

환영사에서 김재휘 총영사는 참여한 모든 분들에게 감사를 표하고 개천절의 의미와 더불어 올해 한국 전쟁 정전 70주년과 한미동맹 70주년을 축하하면서 미국 내 한인사회의 발전, 지난 4월 윤석열 대통령의 방미 등에 대해 언급하면서 한국과 미국의 우호 관계를 강조하였다.
다음으로 축사를 건넨 이본 하오(Yvonne Hao) 매사추세츠주 경제장관은 팥빙수, 떡볶이, 잡채 등 한국 음식과 BTS, 블랙핑크 등을 나열하면서 한국 문화에 대한 애착을 밝혔다. 또한 윤 대통령의 보스턴 방문 당시 주청사에서 개최된 오찬에서 윤 대통령과 함께 한국과 매사추세츠의 협력관계에 대해 대화를 나누었다고 전했다.
이어서 매사추세츠 하원의원 트램 누엔(Tram Nguyen)과 연방하원의원 제이크 오친클로스 (Jake Auchincloss)를 대신한 다나 핸슨(Dana Hanson)도 개천절 행사에 대한 축하의 메시지를 전했다.

축사가 모두 끝난 후, 김 총영사는 앤서니 디프리지오 (Anthony DiPrizzio) 한국전 참전용사에게 평화의 사도 메달을 전수하면서 한국이 어려운 시기에 희생과 헌신한 참전용사와 가족 여러분께 깊은 감사를 표했다.
올해 행사는 개천절 및 한국 전쟁 정전 70주년, 한미 동맹 70주년, 한인 미국 이주 120주년을 맞아 개최되었으며, 특히 한국전 참전용사와 가족, 그리고 미국 내 한인사회에 기여한 분들이 함께 어우러진 뜻 깊은 자리였다.
National Foundation Day Event Alongside Korean War Veterans Korean Americans

On Monday, October 2nd, the Consulate General of Boston hosted this year’s National Foundation Day Event at the Boston University Metcalf Trustee Center. More than 200 people attended the event, including diplomats from the Consulate General in Boston, members of the Massachusetts and federal houses of Congress, Korean War veterans and state officials.
The event started after 6pm and ended with Exeter High School’s Annie Gorman singing the Korean National Anthem (애국가) and The Star-Spangled Banner. Gorman said, “I’m very nervous, but I’m very honored to be invited here,” adding that she was happy to learn a lot about Korea and meet various people at this event.
In the welcoming speech, Consul General Kim Jae-Hwi thanked the event’s participants, explained the importance of Korean National Foundation Day, and emphasized the friendly relationship between Korea and the United States. He also mentioned the development of the Korean community in the United States and President Yoon Suk Yeol’s visit to the United States in April.
Massachusetts Economy Minister Yvonne Hao delivered the following congratulatory message, expressing her appreciation of Korean culture by listing parts of Korean culture such as patbingsu, tteokbokki, and japchae, BTS and Blackpink.
Next, on behalf of Representative Jake Auchinclos, Massachusetts Representatives Tram Nguyen and Dana Hansons delivered a congratulatory message about the Korean National Foundation Day.
After the congratulatory speech was over, Consul General Kim handed down the Apostle of Peace medal to Anthony Diprizzio, a Korean War Veteran. General Kim expressed his deep gratitude for the veterans’ and their families’ sacrifices for Korea during a difficult time in its history.
This year’s event marked the 70th anniversary of both National Foundation Day and the Korean War Armistice or the Korea - U.S. alliance, and the 120th anniversary of Korean immigration to the U.S. Thus, it was a meaningful occasion, especially for the Korean War veterans, their families, and those who contributed to the Korean community during the Korean War.
