크리스마스는 미국 개신교 선교사에 의해 1884년 처음 한국에 소개되었다.이후 개신교 교회들이 들어서면서 한국에서도 크리스마스를 기념하게 되었다. 당시 한 해를 마무리하는 가장 큰 날은 밤이 가장 긴 동지였는데, 양력의 사용과 크리스마스가 널리 확산되기 시작하면서 크리스마스가 동지를 대체하게 되었다.
크리스마스가 상업화된 것은 1930년대부터로, 서로 선물을 주고받거나 친한 지인, 가족들과 함께 시간을 보내는 등의 형태로 크리스마스를 기념하기 시작했다. 허나 1937년 중-일 전쟁 발발 후 일제가 유흥적인 크리스마스 행사를 제한하면서 이러한 문화가 주춤하게 되었다. 광복과 한국전쟁 이후에 크리스마스가 국가공휴일로 지정되면서, 크리스마스의 불꽃은 다시 시작되었다. 1981년까지 지속되었던 통행금지도 크리스마스만큼은 예외였다. 그날만큼은 많은 젊은 사람들이 밤새 즐기며 놀 수 있는 일종의 해방의 날이 되었다. 또한 ‘자선냄비’로 불리는 빨간 냄비 모양 모금함이 길거리, 백화점, 지하철 등 이곳저곳에 존재했는데, 지금은 전에 비해 잘 보이지 않게 되었다. 1960-70년대에는 전기통닭 구이와 버터크림 케이크로 크리스마스 분위기를 내었다. 당시 인기 있던 TV 만화 태권브이로 인해 로봇 완구는 아이들이 가장 받고 싶어 하는 크리스마스 선물이 되었다. 1990년대에는 삐삐, 비디오 게임기, 인형의 집, 블록 장난감이 인기였다. 2000년대에는 패밀리 레스토랑을 찾는 가정들이 많아졌으며, 인기 상품으로는 상품권과 전자기기가 있었다. 크리스마스가 상업화됨으로써, 소수의 개신교 신자끼리 기념하던 종교적인 행사보다는 연인, 가족, 지인들과 함께 보내는 문화적인 행사로 거듭났다.
1960년대~1980년대에는 크리스마스실(seal) 구매가 도덕적 의무인 분위기였다. 당시는 결핵 환자가 많던 시절로, 크리스마스실은 결핵 환자를 돕는 데에 보탠다는 증표였다. 주로 크리스마스카드에 우표와 함께 붙였다. 그러나 디지털 시대로 들어가면서 손 편지를 쓰는 일이 감소하자, 자연스레 크리스마스실의 관심도 줄게 되었다.
1990년대~2000년대부터는 크리스마스는 연인들끼리 보내는 로맨틱하고 특별한 날로 자리 잡기 시작했다. 또한 가족들끼리 같이 시간을 보내는 날로 인식이 되면서, 호텔이나 레스토랑에서 크리스마스 기념 이벤트를 준비하거나 전시회, 공연 같은 문화생활도 활성화되었다. 2010년 이후로는 개인주의적 성향이 늘어나면서, 혼자 혹은 주변 지인/가족들과 소소하게 시간을 보내는 미니멀 크리스마스가 하나의 트렌드로 자리 잡았다. 2020년 코로나가 발발하며 대면 행사를 할 수 없게 되면서 더더욱 가족끼리 집에서 맛있는 음식을 먹는 등의 간단한 모습으로 변화하였다. 당시에는 온라인 쇼핑이나 배달 음식이 식당과 백화점의 자리를 대신했다. 2021년에는 “내 트리를 꾸며줘” 라는 사이트가 유행했었다. 온라인 롤링 페이퍼 형태로, 12월 1일부터 크리스마스이브까지 편지를 받고 25일에 선물처럼 열어볼 수 있다. 코로나가 완화된 2021년~2022년에는 일부 야외 행사가 재개되었고, 홈파티 문화가 확산하면서 방을 빌려 친구나 가족들과 함께 소규모 파티를 여는 등의 형태로 기념하기도 했다. 2023년 이후 코로나 시국이 공식적으로 종료됨을 알리면서, 각종 화젯거리의 장소들의 대규모 행사가 재개되었다. 또한 오랫동안 병역 문제로 인해 제한되던 여행이 풀리면서, 일부 사람들은 크리스마스 휴가 기간 여행을 가는 식으로 크리스마스를 기념하기도 한다.
누군가에게는 기쁨과 설렘이 가득한 날, 누군가에게는 그저 지나가는 날 중 하나인 크리스마스. 올해는 모두에게 조금 더 행복하고 따스한 크리스마스가 되었으면 좋겠다.

Thanks to the popular TV cartoon Taekwon V at the time, robot toys became the most desired Christmas gifts for children.
