미국 현지 학생들이 지난달 3월 대학 합격 결과를 받고 새로운 환경에서의 대학 생활을 기대하며 시간을 보내고 있다. 한편 미국 대학으로의 진학을 꿈꾸고 있는 한국 학생들의 수가 많아진 만큼 미국의 입시와 그 이후 미국 학생들은 어떻게 일상을 보내는지에 대한 궁금증 또한 늘어나고 있다. 그렇다면 한국과 미국의 입시 사이에 존재하는 차이점은 무엇이며 학생들은 입학 결정 이후 어떤 일을 할까?
한국 대학 입시, 수시 모집(Early Admission)과 정시 모집(Regular Admission)
한국의 대학 입시는 크게 수시 모집(Early Admission)과 정시 모집(Regular Admission)으로 나뉜다. 수시 모집은 그 종류가 다양한데 학생부 중심 모집, 대학별 시험, 특기생 선발 이렇게 세가지로 볼 수 있다. 수시 모집에서는 학생이 고등학교 3년 간 어떻게 생활을 해왔는지 전체적으로 평가하여 뽑는 학생부교과전형으로 가장 많은 학생을 선발한다. 이렇게 9월 중순에 수시로 지원한 학생들은 최저학력기준, 흔히 말하는 수능 최저의 필요에 따라 결과 발표일이 달라진다. 수능 최저를 맞추지 않아도 되는 학생들은 이르면 10월 초순에도 합격 결과를 받을 수 있지만, 최저가 필요한 학생들은 12월 9일부터 12월 15일 사이에 발표 결과를 받게 된다.
정시 모집은 한국의 SAT라 불리는 대학수학능력시험, 즉 수능 점수가 절대적으로 중요하다. 11월 초에 실시되는 수능 이후, 학생들은 12월 말에 대학 지원을 시작한다. 정시 모집의 결과 발표는 대학들 모두 제각각이라 학생이 지원한 학교가 정한 결과 발표 시기에 따라 1월 초에서 2월 초까지 한달 중 결과를 받게 된다.
미국 대학 입시, 조기 모집(Early Admission)과 정시 모집(Regular Admission)
미국의 대학 입시는 조기 모집(Early Admission), 정시 모집(Regular Admission), 그리고 수시 모집(Rolling Admission)으로 나누어지는데, 미국의 수시 모집은 한국의 수시 모집과 다르고, 오히려 미국의 조기 모집이 한국의 수시 모집과 비슷하다는 점을 인지해야 한다. 또한 미국의 수시 모집은 몇 개의 주립 대학들만 받고 있으므로 많은 학생들이 주로 지원하는 전형은 아니다.
조기 모집과 정시 모집은 같은 평가 기준을 가지고 합격자를 선발한다. 고등학교 평점(GPA), 대외활동(extracurricular activities), 표준화 시험(SAT/ACT), 에세이(college essay), 그리고 추천서(Letter of Recommendation)를 충족시켜야 지원이 가능하고, 학생이 선택한 전형에 따라 결과와 합격 발표일이 달라진다.
조기 모집은 11월에 지원하여 일반적으로 12월에서 2월 사이에 결과를 받을 수 있다. 정시 모집의 경우에는 1월에 신청해서 3월 중에 학교로부터 합격 여부를 알게 된다.
대학 입시 결과 발표 후 학생들의 생활
한국 학생들과 미국 학생들은 대학 입시 일정에 많은 차이가 있기 때문에 입학을 결정하고 나서 대학에 다니기까지 주어진 시간도 다르다. 앞서 말했다시피 한국 학생들은 입시 전형에 따라 이르면 10월, 늦으면 2월에 입사 결과를 알 수 있기에 대학 입학까지 길어야 4개월의 시간이 주어지는데, 미국 학생들은 늦어도 3월이면 합격 여부를 알 수 있기 때문에 적어도 5개월 이상의 시간을 대학 입학 전에 사용할 수 있다.
그렇다면 한국 학생들과 미국 학생들은 대학 입학 전 어떤 일을 하며 시간을 보낼까? 현재 한국의 모 대학에 재학 중인 김채린 양(19)은 대학 합격 후 2개월의 기간을 ‘12년 고생의 보답’으로 여겼다고 한다. ‘명문 대학교 입학이라는 하나의 목표를 위해 긴 시간동안 노력했다‘며 ’친구들과 함께 두 달간 여행도 다니고 새로운 취미를 찾으며 수험 생활의 스트레스에 대한 보상을 받는 기분이었다‘고 말했다. 그러나 ’4개월은 하고 싶은 일을 다 하고 자격증을 따기엔 부족한 시간이었다‘며 안타까운 심정을 드러내기도 했다.
지난달 3월 미국 현지에서 대학 합격 발표를 듣고 설레는 마음으로 입학을 기다리고 있는 전주현 군(18)은 본인에게 주어진 5개월을 누구보다 즐겁고 알차게 보내고 있다고 말했다. 그는 ’미술 같은 대외 활동을 통해 포트폴리오를 마무리하고 있고, 아르바이트를 통해 돈을 모으며 업무 경험을 기르고 있다‘며 본인이 계획한 목표들을 위해 미리 준비하고 있다고 밝혔다. 또한 ‘AP 수업들을 잘 마무리할 수 있도록 공부를 해 나가면서도 친구들과 함께 많은 시간을 보내고 있다‘고 말했다. 그는 ‘하루빨리 대학교에 입학하고 싶기 때문에 주어진 시간이 충분하다 못해 많다고 느껴지기도 한다’고 얘기하며 대학을 다니기 전 기간에 대해 한국 학생과는 다른 견해를 보였다.
The Differences in Korean and American university entrance exams

The announcement of the results of regular recruitment is different for all universities, so you will receive the results during the month from early January to early February, depending on the announcement time set by the school you applied for.
US University Admission, Early Admission and Regular Admission
University entrance in the US is divided into Early Admission, Regular Admission, and Rolling Admission. It should be noted that it is similar to regular recruitment. Also, admissions in the US are not typical for many students, as only a few state universities accept them.
Early recruitment and on-time recruitment use the same evaluation criteria to select successful applicants. In order to apply, students must meet the high school GPA, extracurricular activities, standardized tests (SAT/ACT), college essay, and letter of recommendation. Admission announcement date is different.
For early recruitment, you can apply in November and receive results generally between December and February. In the case of regular admission, applications are made in January, and the school will inform you of your acceptance in March.
Students' lives after the announcement of university entrance exam results
Because Korean students and American students have very different college entrance exam schedules, the amount of time given for them to attend college after deciding to enroll is also different. As mentioned earlier, Korean students can find out their admission results in October at the earliest or February at the latest, depending on the entrance exam, so they are given four months at most to enter college, but American students can know whether they passed in March at the latest.
