빨리 늙는 더 좋은 방법은 무엇일까? 설날은 음력 새해를 기념하는 명절이다. 이날 떡국을 먹으면 한 살 더 먹는 것으로 추정된다. 비록 이 기념일과 관련된 많은 전통들이 있지만, 한국계 미국인들은 이 기념일들로부터 소외감을 느낄지도 모른다…
설날을 어떻게 축사 하나요? 어떤 음식나 놀이를 하나요?
가은: 나는 보통 떡국 안먹고 딱히 다른 건 안 해. 그래도 한국 학교 덕분에 내가 설날의 다양한 전통들에 익숙해줄 수 있었던 것 같아. 내 친척들 중 아무도 미국에 살지 않아서 나는 단지 햇가족과 함께 설날을 보내. 나는 가족들이 멀리서 살아서 설날의 전통들을 완전히 수용을 못 한 것 같아. 왜냐하면 설날은 분명히 한국의 큰 명절인데 나는 작은 명절로 보는 경향이 있어. 우리 가족은 H마트에 방문해서 약과, 떡, 만두, 그리고 가끔 식혜를 사. 떡만두국 하고 전을 가끔 만드는데, 다른 건 딱히 없어.
유나: 우리는 떡국같은 전통 한식 먹고 가족들하고 친구들과 시간을 보내면서 기념을 해. 할머니가 점심 먹으러 오시고 우리는 보통 친구 가족 집에 저녁을 먹으러 가. 한국에 있는 가족들이 항상 명절에 모여서 함께 보내기 때문에 미국에 살면 한국의 명절을 보내는게 더 힘들어지는 것 같고, 크면서 그런 경험을 자주 할 수 없었어. 떡국 말고는 보통 다른 한국식을 먹어. 보통 이 시기가 되면, 엄마는 냉동고에 저장할 김치만두를 많이 만드셔. 나는 엄마를 최대한 도와드리려고 노력하고, 만두를 다 만든 다음에 먹어. 엄마가 만들어 주신 만두가 제일 맛있고 내가 가장 좋아하는 음식이야.
한국계 미국인 으로서는, 설날을 다르게 축사 하는 가요?
가은: 한국에서는 대부분 한복을 입고 가족들과 민속놀이를 하며 설날을 보내지만, 나는 신체 활동에 참여하는 대신 마음가짐만으로 보내는 것 같아. 솔직히, 나는 확실히 양력 새해를 좀 더 중요하게 생각하는 것아.
유나: 대체로 설날을 조용하게 보내고 크게 하는게 없어.
어렸을때 설날에 대해 배운 게 뭔가요?
가은: 나는 설날이든 음력 설날이든 이날에 떡국을 먹으면 한 살을 더 먹을 수 있다는 것을 배웠어.
유나: 나는 아이들이 어른들에게 절을 하고 세뱃돈을 받는다는 것을 배웠고, 설날은 가족들이 모이는 시간을 보내는 날이라고 배웠어.
어렸을때 한국학교에서 설날에 대해 배운 게 뭔가요?
가은: 나는 제기차기와 윷놀이 같은 전통 놀이를 배웠어고 새배도 배웠어.
유나: 나는 보통, 다양한 음식들과 함께 설날때 하는 모든 다양한 활동들과 게임들에 대해 배웠어. 어렸을 때는 한국에서 놀던 게임하고 받는 돈에 대해 더 많이 생각했지만, 지금은 가족과 함께 보내는 시간으로 주로 생각해.
설날에 대한 가장 좋아하는 기억은 뭔가요?
가은: 우리 가족이 설날을 맞이하여 처음 H마트에서 한과를 샀을 때 약과 맛이 났는데 식감이 스티로폼 같아서 신났던 기억이 나.
유나: 설날에 대한 내가 가장 좋아하는 기억은 엄마와 함께 김치 만두 산더미 처럼 만들고 금방 찐 만두를 먹는거야.
비록 전 세계 미국계 한인들이 설날을 온전히 지켜볼 수는 없겠지만, 모두가 독특한 방법으로 가족들과 설날을 매해 기념하고 있다.

What’s a better way to quickly age? Selnal is a ubiquitous holiday that celebrates the lunar new year. It is assumed that if you eat tteokuk on this day, you become one year older. Although there are many traditions that are associated with the holiday, Korean Americans may feel detached from the celebrations….
How do you celebrate 설날? What types of foods or activities do you partake in?
Gaeun: I usually just eat tteokguk and do nothing else in particular. I think Korean school helped me familiarize with a variety of 설날 traditions though. None of my relatives reside in the states so I just celebrate with my nuclear family. I think having my family members live far away prevents me from fully embracing 설날 and its traditions because currently, I have a tendency to view it as a minor holiday when it’s definitely a major one. My family visits Hmart and purchases 약과, 떡, 만두, and occasionally 식혜. We make 떡마두국 and sometimes 전, but that’s essentially it.
Yuna: We celebrate it by eating 설날 foods like 떡국 and spending time with family and friends. My grandma comes over for lunch and we usually go to a family friend’s house for dinner. I definitely think living in America makes it more difficult to celebrate Korean holidays because my family in Korea always gets together on holidays and celebrates it together, and I could not have that experience growing up. Other than 떡국, we eat normal korean sides and such. Normally around this time of year, my mom makes a ton of kimchi dumplings to store in the freezer. I try to help as much as I can, and we eat dumplings for the next meal when we’re done making them. They are the best dumplings ever and also my all time favorite food.
As a Korean American, do you celebrate 설날 in a different/adapted way?
Gaeun: Most people in Korea celebrate it by wearing 한복 and playing folk games with their family members, but I think I celebrate more with just a mindset instead of participating in physical activities. To be honest, I often forget about 설날 and view it as secondary to the solar calendar new year. I think I definitely celebrate it to a lesser degree.
Yuna: I think our celebration is generally more low-key.
What did you learn about 설날 growing up?
Gaeun: I learned that it’s the lunar new year and that you can age one extra year if you eat 떡국 on this day.
Yuna: I learned that children bow to their elders and receive money, and that 설날 was a time where family got together to spend time.
What did you learn about 설날 in Korean school growing up?
Gaeun: I learned traditional games like 제기차기 and 윷놀이. I also learned how to 새배, which I never had to do at home since I never celebrated 설날 with my distant family.
Yuna: I learned about all the different activities and games played at 설날, along with the various foods that are usually eaten. When I was little, I thought more about the money and games we played at 한국학교, but now I think it’s more about spending time with family.
What is your favorite memory of 설날?
Gaeun: I remember the first time my family bought 한과 from Hmart we were really excited because it tasted like a 약과 but the texture was like airy styrofoam.
Yuna: My favorite memory of 설날 is making mountains of kimchi dumplings with my mom and eating the freshly steamed dumplings afterwards.
Although Korean Americans around the world may not be able to fully observe Seollnal, they are all celebrating it in their own unique ways to connect with their family and heritage.
