최근 몇 년 간, 인기 있는 한국 노래들 혹은 흔히 알려진 케이팝 곡들이 전 세계적으로 유명세를 타고 있다. 특히나 미국 내에서는 블랙핑크(Blackpink)나 방탄소년단(BTS)과 같은 유명 케이팝 가수들의 노래를 따라 부르고 춤을 추는 사람들의 수가 많은 편이다. 케이팝은 한국 문화계 뿐만 아니라 ‘대한민국’이라는 국가 자체에 크게 알려졌기 때문에 그만큼 한국인들에게 많은 영향을 미쳐 왔다. 이러한 케이팝의 영향으로 인해, 한국과 한국 문화에 대한 새로운 사랑과 찬사, 그리고 누군가가 이 사랑과 찬사의 일부가 될 수 있다는 것을 알게 된 많은 한국계 미국인들이 스스로의 정체성에 자부심을 가질 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 또한 다른 사람들에게 미움을 받는 것처럼 보였던 자신을 인정하고 행복감을 얻을 수도 있었다. 이 모든 것을 고려해보았을 때, 케이팝은 사람들이 자신의 문화를 배우고 싶어하는 방식에도 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 본인의 경우, 많은 사람들이 학교에 나가서 하루씩 더 공부하는 것을 선호하지 않는다는 것을 알지만, 한국 학교에 시간을 투자함으로써 한국어를 배우고 한국의 문화와 역사에 대해 아는 것이 한국계 미국인으로서 내가 누구인지 배우는 중요한 단계라는 것을 깨달았다. 그리고 그것이 스스로에게 있어 한국 학교를 다니는 이유였다는 것을 자랑스럽게 여겨야 한다는 점 또한 알게 되었다. 물론 케이팝의 멋진 가수들과 같은 나라 출신이라는 사실 또한 내가 한국 문화를 배우고자 하는 이유 중 하나인데, 그렇기에 케이팝 가수들을 포용하는 것이 매우 중요하다고 생각하며 그들로 인해 한국계 미국인들이 한국의 놀라운 문화를 인정할 수 있게 된 것은 너무나 행운이라고 생각한다.
K-Pop’s Influence on Korean Americans

In recent years, Korean popular music, or more commonly known as K-pop, has been trending all across the world. Especially here in America, there are people who love to sing and dance to songs made by popular Korean artists and groups like Blackpink and BTS. K-pop has had a huge impact on Korean as it gave more awareness to Korea itself as well as the culture within the country. There are many Korean Americans that have taken pride in their Korean identity because of this new love and praise toward Korea and its culture and so knowing that someone can be a part of this love and praise gives them a sense of happiness and recognition for a part of their identity that seemed to be loathed by others. All things considered; this can also affect the way people want to learn about their culture. Although many people seem to loathe going to school an extra day of the week, I’ve realized that for learning about how to speak the language and knowing about the culture and history were important steps to learning who I am as a Korean American and I should proud of that, which was the main goal of Korean School for me. Of course, there is also the aspect of coming from the same country as the coolest groups and artists of K-pop, which I also believe is super important to embrace and that Korean Americans are so lucky to be recognized for our amazing culture.
