지난 10월 10일, 한강 작가는 노벨문학상을 수상하여 한국에 큰 영광을 안겨주었다. 한강 작가는 1970년 서울에서 태어나 연세대학에서 국어국문학을 공부하던 시절 윤동주 문학상을 수상하고 1994년 서울신문 신춘문예 소설 부문에 단편소설 “붉은 닻”이 당선되며 소설가로서 본격적인 작품 활동을 시작했다.
한강 작가의 대표작인 "채식주의자"는 사람의 내면과 사회의 어두운 면을 섬세하게 그려낸 3부 연작 소설로 영어로 번역되어 국내외에서 큰 인기를 끌었고 2016년에 아시아 최초로 영국의 부커 국제상을 수상했다. "채식주의자"는 한 여자가 고기를 먹지 않기로 결심하면서 벌어지는 이야기로, 가족과 주변 사람들의 갈등과 그녀의 변화를 다루고 있다.
2017년에 이탈리아 말라파르테 문학상을 수상한 "소년이 온다"는 1980년대 광주민주화운동을 배경으로 한 장편 소설이다. 이 책은 당시의 아픈 역사와 그 시대를 살아간 사람들의 이야기를 감동적으로 담아내어 많은 독자들에게 깊은 울림을 주었다. 제주 4.3 사건 전반을 다룬 장편 소설 “작별하지 않는다”는 프랑스 메디치 외국문학상과 에밀 기메 아시아 문학상을 수상하였고 “소년이 온다”와 함께 한강을 2024년 노벨문학상 수상자로 인정받도록한 또 하나의 대표작이다.
이번 노벨문학상 수상은 한강 작가와 한국 문학을 국제적으로 인정받는 계기가 되었다. 대한민국 작가로서 최초로 노벨 문학상을 수상하였을 뿐 아니라 아시아 여류 작가로서
첫 노벨문학상 수상자로 기록되었다. 노벨 위원회 위원장 Anders Olsson은 한강 작가에 대해 “그녀는 육체와 영혼, 산 자와 죽은 자 사이의 연결에 대한 독특한 인식을 가지고 있으며, 시적이고 실험적인 스타일로 현대 산문의 혁신가”라고 높이 평가했다.
한국 음악과 드라마 등 다양한 경로를 통해 한국문화에 관심을 갖게 되어 한국어를 공부하는 외국인 학생이 늘고 있는 요즘 한강의 노벨문학상 수상은 BTS, “기생충” 그리고 “오징어 게임”에 이어 세계적으로 한국 문학에 대한 관심을 불러일으키는 중요한 동력이 될 것이다.

On October 10th, Han Kang brought great honor to Korea by winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. Born in 1970 in Seoul, Han Kang studied Korean Language and Literature at Yonsei University, where she won the Yun Dong-ju Literary Award. In 1994, her short story "The Scarlet Anchor" won the Seoul Newspaper Annual Spring Literary Contest, marking the beginning of her professional writing career.
Han Kang's most famous work, "The Vegetarian," is a trilogy that delves deep into the inner human psyche and darker aspects of society. This novel, translated into English, gained international popularity and became the first Asian work to win the Man Booker International Prize in 2016. "The Vegetarian" tells the story of a woman who decides to stop eating meat and explores the ensuing conflicts with her family and the profound transformation she experiences.
The novel "Human Acts," which won the Italian Malaparte Prize in 2017, is set against the backdrop of the 1980s Gwangju Democratization Movement. This poignant work resonates deeply with readers as it profoundly captures the painful history and stories of people who lived through that era. Her more recent novel "We Do Not Part," which explores the Jeju 4.3 Uprising, won the French Prix Médicis Étranger last year and the Émile Guimet Prize for Asian Literature earlier this year. Together with "Human Acts," it played a key role in securing Han Kang’s recognition as the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Literature.
Han Kang's Nobel Prize is a significant milestone in the international recognition of Korean literature. She is the first South Korean writer and the first Asian female author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson praised her, "She has a unique awareness of the
connections between body and soul, the living and the dead, and her poetic and experimental style has become an innovator in
contemporary prose."
Fueled by K-pop and K-dramas, interest in Korean culture is growing, and an increasing number of foreign students are studying Korean these days. Han Kang’s Nobel Prize win will further drive global interest in Korean literature, joining the likes of BTS, "Parasite," and "Squid Game.”
