뉴튼에 있는 Newton South High School은 매년 Asian Night을 개최한다. 매년 3월 초에 열리는 아시안 나잇은 다양한 아시안 문화의 아름다움을 뽐낼수 있는 장기자랑과 같다. 뉴튼 하이스쿨의 아시안 나잇은, ASO(Asian Student Organization), SASA(South Asian Student Organization), 그리고 MESWANA(Middle Eastern, South West Asian, North African) 동아리들이 함께 연계하여 기획된 행사이다. 공연은 학교 학생들뿐만 아닌 선생님들까지도 할 수 있으며, 동양인이 아니더라도 같이 공연을 하고 다 함께 즐길수있는 특별한 밤이다. 공연들로는, 케이팝이 등 아시안 노래를 주로 부르고, 아시안 노래를 악기로 연주하거나, 아니면 한국의 북, 해금이나 가야금처럼 다양한 나라의 전통악기들을 연주하는 모습도 볼 수 있다. 음악 뿐만이 아니라, 한복과 같은 전통 옷이나 Lion Dance 같은 전통 탈을 쓰고 춤을 추는가 하면, 여러 나라의 다양한 무기와 무술 공연도 많다. 여러 공연들 중에 학교에 있는 케이팝 댄스 동아리와 태권도 동아리 또한 공연을 준비했는데, 이는 관객들의 큰 환호성을 받으며 많은 관심을 샀다. 케이팝 클럽은 뉴진스, 에스파 등 인기있는 케이팝 노래에 같이 춤추며 많은 관객들이 따라불러 즐길 수 있는 무대를 선보였다. 태권도 클럽은 한국 무술의 아름다움을 보이는 품새와, 여러 발차기로 격파를 하여 많은 관객들의 놀라움과 환호를 자아냈다.

Newton South High School in Newton hosts an Asian Night every year. Asian Night, which is held in early March, is like a talent show that showcases the beauty of various Asian cultures. Newton High School's Asian Night is an event planned in conjunction with different clubs like ASO (Asian Student Organization), SASA (South Asian Student Organization), and MESWANA (Middle Eastern, South West Asian, North African). The performance is open to not only school students but also teachers, and it is a special night where everyone can perform and enjoy together even if they are not Asian. In performances, many people sing Asian songs such as K-pop, or play Asian songs with instruments, or even play traditional instruments from various countries, such as the Korean drum, haegeum, and gayageum. In addition to music, there are also many dances wearing ones' traditional clothing or masks such as the Lion Dance, as well as performances of various weapons and martial arts from various countries. Among the many performances, the school's K-pop Club and Taekwondo Club also prepared performances, which received loud cheers from the audience and attracted a lot of attention. The K-pop Club presented a stage where many audiences could enjoy singing along and dancing to popular K-pop songs such as New Jeans and Aespa. The Taekwondo Club drew surprise and many cheers from audiences by demonstrating the beauty of Korean martial arts through poomsae, and with board breaking using multiple kicking techniques.

세계 각지의 서로 다른 문화를 알리는 문화의 밤(Multicultural Night)이 지난 1월 25일 윈체스터 하이스쿨(Winchester High School)에서 열렸다. 한국을 포함한 동아시아를 비롯해 서아시아, 라틴 아메리카, 유럽, 그리고 미국의 문화 등 다양한 문화가 각자의 부스에서 소개되었다.
필자는 아시안 클럽의 구성원이자 한국인으로서 한국 부스를 맡아 참여했다. 직접 만든 라면과 김밥, 김치볶음밥을 나누고 한국 음식을 홍보했다. 특히 김밥은 많은 사람들이 다시 찾을 정도로 큰 인기를 끌었다. 한국의 전통 악기인 북과 장구, 아쟁과 피리를 전시했다. 함께 부스를 준비한 한국 학생들은 한복을 입고 아쟁과 피리를 연주해 모두의 시선을 끌기도 했다. 아쟁의 ‘진도 아리랑’ 연주와 피리의 ‘아리랑(경기 민요)’ 연주 및 노래는 모두가 발걸음을 멈추고 경청할 정도로 멋진 모습을 보여주었다. 연주를 관람한 윈체스터 학생 중 한 명은 “피리의 소리가 너무 아름다웠다”며 본인도 배워보고 싶은 악기가 되었다고 평을 남겼다.
문화의 밤은 종종 한국의 문화를 오해하거나 헷갈리는 사람들에게 우리 문화를 다시 알리기 좋은 기회였다. 처음에는 절반이 넘는 학생들이 김밥을 ‘스시’라고 칭했고, 한국의 전통 의상인 한복이나 전통 악기인 피리가 정말 한국의 것인지 확신하지 못하는 학생들도 많았다. 그러나 직접 음식과 악기를 소개하고 다른 동아시아 국가들의 전통과의 차이점을 설명하자 학생들이 한국의 문화에 대해 더욱 정확히 이해할 수 있었다.
다른 부스에서 소개된 문화들도 학생들의 흥미를 끌었다. 중국 부스에서는 중국의 춘절(Lunar New Year)을 홍보하며 우리나라의 세벳주머니와 비슷한 역할을 하는 빨간 주머니를 학생들에게 나눠주었다. 아랍 부스에서는 오늘날의 북 종류를 통칭하는 악기인 멤브라노폰을 전시했다. 다른 다양한 부스에서는 나라를 대표하는 음식을 맛볼 수 있었으며 작은 게임을 진행하기도 했다.
이번 문화의 밤은 학생들에게 세계의 다양한 문화를 경험하고 이해할 수 있는 소중한 기회가 되었다. 서로 다른 문화를 존중하고 이해함으로써 미국의 학생들이 더 넓은 시야를 가지게 되고 다양성을 포용하는 사회를 만들어갈 수 있기를 기대한다.
Winchester High School’s Multicultural Night

The Multicultural Night hosted by Winchester High School on January 25th presents an opportunity for students to share cultures from all corners of the world. Diverse cultures, including East Asian, Korean, Latin American, European, and American, were exhibited at its respective booths.
As a member of the Asian American club and a Korean, I volunteered to take charge of the Korean booth. Korean foods were promoted by sharing home-made ramen, gimbap, and kimchi fried rice. The gimbap was especially popular, with many people returning for more.
Traditional Korean instruments such as the buk (drum), janggu, ajaeng and flute were on display. Students who set up the Korean booth wore hanbok (traditional Korean clothes) and played the ajaeng and flute, attracting all attention. The performances of “Jindo Arirang” on the ajaeng and “Arirang” (a Gyeonggi folk song) on the flute were so captivating that everyone stopped to listen. A Winchester student who watched the performance commented, “The sound of the flute was so beautiful,” expressing a desire to learn the instrument.
Multicultural Night was the perfect chance to correct misunderstandings or confusion about Korean culture. Initially, more than half of the students called gimbap ‘sushi,’ and were uncertain about whether the traditional Korean attire hanbok or the traditional instrument flute were genuinely Korean. However, students were able to gain a more accurate understanding of Korean culture as we introduced traditional foods and instruments and explained the cultural differences from other East Asian countries.
Meanwhile, other culture booths attracted students’ attention too. The Chinese culture booth promoted China’s Lunar New Year while handing out red envelopes similar to our traditional Lunar New Year money pouches. The Arab culture booth displayed the membranophone, an instrument that resembles a drum. Various other booths offered representative foods from different countries and even mini games.
This year’s Multicultural Night allowed students the valuable opportunity to experience and understand the diverse cultures that compose our school community. By respecting and understanding different cultures, we hope that American students will develop a broader perspective and build a society that embraces diversity.

렉싱턴 고등학교에서는 매년 Asian Student Union이 학교에서 아시아 나이트를 한다. 거기서 많은 학생들이 아시아 음악과 춤으로 자신의 재능을 선보일 수 있다. 올해 행사는 학생 이자벨라 리가 연주하는 덜시머라는 악기와 함께 시작되었다. 이사벨라 리 학생이 훌륭하게 편곡한 곡이었다. 그 후에는 Kpop과 인도 멜로디에서 많은 문화적 춤이 있었다. 각각의 공연 사이에는 춤을 칭찬하고 재미있게 농담하는 MC가 있었다. 첫 번째 반에서는 조 하이사시의 곡을 연주하는 플루트부터 오보에까지 다양한 악기 연주를 감상할 수 있었다.
첫 번째 반이 끝난 후에는 관객들이 야외에서 신선한 공기를 마시고 강당 옆에 마련된 스탠드에서 간식을 살 수 있었다. 스탠드에는 떡부터 초코파이까지 다양한 아시아 간식이 있었다. 10분의 휴식 후 두 번째 반을 시작했다. 두 번째 반은 첫 번째 반과 비슷하게 노래, 춤, 악기 연주로 이루어졌지만, 행사 종료 시에는 아시아 나이트를 조직한 리더들이 무대에 올라가 Kpop 노래를 유쾌하게 춤추며 다른 사람도 함께 춤을 추도록 초대했다. 행사는 약 2시간 동안 진행되었고, 렉싱턴 커뮤니티에 아시아 사람들의 재능을 멋지게 선보인 훌륭한 행사였다.
Lexington High School’s Asian Night

At Lexington High School, the Asian Student Union hosts an annual Asian Night, where many students can showcase their talents in Asian music and dance. This year's event began with student Isabella Lee playing the dulcimer instrument, with a splendid arrangement by Isabella Lee herself. Following that, there were many cultural dances from K-pop and Indian melodies. Between each performance, there was an MC who praised the dances and entertained with fun jokes. In the first part, there were various instrumental performances ranging from flute to oboe, including a rendition of a piece by Joe Hisaishi.
After the first part, the audience could enjoy snacks outdoors, including various Asian snacks from rice cakes to chocolate pies. After a 10-minute break, the second pa|³rt began, which consisted of similar performances of songs, dances, and instrumental pieces. However, at the end of the event, the leaders of Asian Night took the stage, inviting everyone to dance joyfully to K-pop songs. The event lasted for about 2 hours and was a fantastic showcase of Asian talents in the Lexington community.
