올해 10월부터 미국에서 본격적으로 시행되는 디지털 PSAT에 많은 학생들의 관심이 쏟아지고 있다. 내년 3월부터는 본래의 페이퍼 SAT가 아닌 새롭게 개편된 디지털 SAT를 치뤄야 하기 때문이다.
2022년 칼리지보드는 2024년 3월부터 SAT를 디지털 방식으로 전환할 것을 알렸다. 칼리지보드는 ‘시대의 흐름에 맞춘 당연한 변화’라는 태도를 보였다. 이미 많은 학생들이 디지털을 통해 공부하고 시험을 보고 있는 상황에서 SAT만 예외가 될 수는 없다는 것이다. 또한, 디지털 SAT가 미래에는 시공간의 제약 없이 시험을 보는 것을 더욱 쉽게 하고, SAT School Day를 진행하는 학교에 문제 제공 빈도를 높여 저소득층 학생들에게 시험을 볼 기회를 더 많이 제공하게 될 것이라고 기대를 보였다.
현재까지 알려진 디지털 SAT 시험 방식의 변화는 크게 두 가지다. 첫째는 리딩과 라이팅 영역의 지문이 페이퍼 SAT와 비교해 매우 짧아졌다는 점이다. 페이퍼 SAT가 최소 4개 문단의 지문을 제시하고 그 안에서 약 5개의 문제를 해결하도록 했다면, 디지털 SAT는 한 문단 당 하나의 문제만 주어지도록 바뀌었다. 둘째로는 수학 영역의 모든 문제에서 계산기를 사용할 수 있다는 것이다. 시험을 치르는데 사용하는 테스트 프로그램에 내장되어있는 공학용 계산기 혹은 승인된 개인 계산기를 이용할 수 있다.
전체적으로 짧아진 지문과 전 영역 계산기 사용이 가능하다는 사실에 전보다 부담이 줄었다는 학생들이 많다. 다만 달라진 시험 문제 유형과 출제 방식을 미리 접하고 연습하기 위한 자료가 필요하다는 반응 또한 다수 존재하기 때문에, 학생들이 디지털 SAT를 대비할 몇 가지 방법을 소개하려 한다.
우선 칼리지보드가 직접 만든 블루북(Bluebook)이라는 프로그램에 있는 전범위 모의고사를 보는 방법이다. 블루북은 실제 디지털 SAT를 치를 때도 사용되는 프로그램으로, 본 시험과 가장 유사한 문제를 제공하며 실전처럼 시간을 측정해 연습할 수 있다.
또 다른 방법은 칸 아카데미의 디지털 SAT 코스를 듣는 것이다. 칸 아카데미는 리딩 및 라이팅 영역과 수학 영역의 강의와 문제를 무료로 제공한다. 계획을 세워 매일 매일 문제를 풀고 새로운 유형에 적응하기 가장 쉽다.
칼리지보드는 시험의 큰 형식만 바뀌었을 뿐, 평가하고자 하는 기술과 출제 기준은 변하지 않았다고 말했다. 또한, 칼리지보드는 학교에서 배우는 것에 집중하고 조금씩 미리 시험을 대비하는 것이 좋은 점수를 받기 위한 가장 명확한 길이라고 강조했다.
미국의 표준화 시험인 디지털 SAT가 학생들을 상대로 원하는 능력이 무엇인지 정확히 인지하고 최선을 다해 준비한다면 좋은 결과가 있을 것이다.
How to Prepare for the Upcoming Digital SAT

Many students have expressed growing interest in the new digital PSAT which was officially administered in the US starting October this year. Beginning March next year, students will have to take the newly designed digital SAT rather than the traditional paper version.
In 2022, College Board announced that the SAT would become fully digital starting March 2024, expressing it as a “natural change reflecting the times.” With many students already studying and taking exams digitally, it is no longer viable for the SAT to remain an exception. Additionally, the SAT hopes to reduce the time and space constraints in the future and increase the number of schools that can run SAT School Days, providing more opportunities for low-income students to take the SAT.
Currently, there are two major changes that are known. The first of those changes being that the scope of the reading and writing sections are very short compared to the paper SAT. While the paper SAT provides a passage consisting of at least 4 paragraphs and asks to solve 10-11 questions attaining to said paragraphs, the digital SAT provides one small paragraph per question. The second change is that you may use a calculator for all questions in the math section. You may bring an approved calculator or you may use the digital calculator that is built into the testing program itself.
Many students feel less burdened by the fact that the passages have become shorter overall and that they are allowed to use calculators throughout the test. However, with the introduction of a new test format and question types, here are some tips and resources to help students prepare for the digital SAT.
One way to prepare for the digital SAT is to take full-length practice tests available on Bluebook, a computer program created by College Board itself. Bluebook is a program used for the actual digital SAT, providing most similar questions to the actual tests and allowing students to practice with the same timed conditions.
Another resource for students is to take the Khan Academy Digital SAT course. Khan Academy offers free lessons and practice problems pertaining to all sections of the digital SAT. Khan Academy makes it easier to get used to the digital SAT as it provides lesson plans and daily practice problems.
The College Board stated that although the format of the SAT has changed, the skills and standards they aim to assess have remain unchanged. In addition, the College Board emphasized that focusing on what is taught in school and consistently preparing for the test is the surest path to earning a good score.
If students understand the skills needed for the digital SAT, a standardized tests in the United States, and put in their best effort to prepare for the exam, then they are bound to achieve positive results.
