부모님 고향의 언어를 직접 가르치는 즐거움을 아는 한국학교의 보조교사라면 관심을 가져볼 만한 프로그램이 있다. 바로 차세대 리더 양성 프로그램이다. 프로그램에 대한 자세한 정보를 얻기 위해, 지난 2021년 여름 차세대 리더 양성 프로그램을 이수하고 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교에서 세종과정 자두반을 1년 동안 맡아 가르쳤던 김수지 학생(18)을 만나 인터뷰를 진행했다.
차세대 리더 양성 프로그램은 7주라는 긴 기간동안 이루어졌다고 한다. 김수지 학생은 프로그램에 참여하기 위해 필요한 능력으로 기본적인 한국어 의사소통 능력과 계획성을 꼽았다. 프로그램 내 진행되는 강의에 적극적으로 참여하고 그에 대한 보고서 작성이 필요했기 때문에 우수한 한국어 실력이 필요하다고 강조했다. 또한 최종적으로는 스스로 수업을 준비하고 진행해야 했기 때문에 꼼꼼하게 계획을 짜는 것도 중요하다고 말했다.
차세대 리더 양성 프로그램을 이수하고 나서 새롭게 배우게 된 부분에 대해 물었다. 김수지 학생은 “수업 중 학생들이 매우 빨리 지루해지는 것을 보았는데, 학생들이 지루함을 느끼지 않게 수업에 지속적인 참여를 유도하는 방법에 대해 많이 배웠다”고 얘기했다.
차세대 리더 양성 프로그램을 한국학교 보조교사들에게 추천하고 싶은 이유에 대해 질문했을 때에는 프로그램을 경험한 사람만이 할 수 있는 매우 중요한 답변이 돌아왔다. 김수지 학생은 “(차세대 리더 양성 프로그램은) 한국학교 졸업생들이 한국어 교사가 되기 위해 주도적으로 새로운 학습을 경험하고 공동체에 더 몰입할 기회를 제공한다”며 프로그램의 장점을 언급했다. 그러나 그와는 별개로 “모든 보조교사들에게 무조건 추천만 할 수는 없을 것 같다”며 현실적인 조언을 전달했다. 김수지 학생은 시간 투자를 많이 할 수 있고 익숙하지 않은 경험을 할 준비가 된 사람이 프로그램에 참여하기 바람직하다고 말했다. 또한, 교사로서 한국학교 수업을 준비하는 것과 학생으로서 학교 생활에 집중하는 것에 올바른 균형을 찾아야 한다고 강조했다.
김수지 학생은 인터뷰를 통해 본인의 한국학교 교사로서의 경험이 얼마나 소중했는지 거듭 이야기했다. 책임을 맡은 반의 아이들이 한국어를 읽고 쓰는데 있어서 일취월장하는 모습을 바라보며 느꼈던 뿌듯함은 아직도 잊을 수 없다며, 황홀한 기억이었다고 언급했다. 이어 학교 내 선생님들과 세종과정 선생님들, 교장 선생님, 그리고 지도교사 박현아 선생님의 많은 도움에 감사를 전하기도 했다.

Valuable Experiences Gained from the Next Generation Leader Development Program

If you are a Korean School Teacher Assistant and loves teaching the language of your parents’ hometown, this program is worth considering; The Next Generation Leader Development Program. To learn more about this program, I held an interview with Kim Suzie, an 18 year student who has completed this program in the summer of 2021 and taught the Sejong Course Plum Class at NEKS for a year.
According to Suzie, The Next Generation Leader Development Program is a 7 week program. Here are some important skills she highlighted that are necessary to be successful in this program; basic Korean language communication skills, leadership skills, and careful planning. These skills would allow you to successfully participate in the program’s lectures and prepare for reports.
I asked her what she had learned after completing the program. She responded, “I noticed that students would quickly become bored during classes, so I learned many new ways to keep them active and engaged in the lessons to prevent it.”
When I asked why she would recommend The Next Generation Leader Development Program to Korean school teacher assistants, Suzie’s response was something that could be only heard from a person who was a seasoned participant of this program; she stated, “the program offers Korean school graduates the opportunity to actively experience new learning and become more involved in the community as they strive to become Korean language teachers.” However, she also stated as a pragmatic advice, “I don’t think I can recommend it unconditionally to all assistant teachers.” She suggested that those who are fully prepared to invest a lot of time and step out of their comfort zone should participate in the program. As well as that, Suzie highlighted the need to find the right balance between preparation of classes as a teacher and focusing on student life outside of Korean School.
Suzie continuously spoke about the precious experience as a Korean school teacher during the interview. She mentioned that she felt very fulfilled and proud as she watched the students in her class making remarkable progress in Korean literacy. She expressed her gratitude to many teachers at the same Korean school, as well as including the Sejong Course teachers, principal Nam, and Teacher Hyunah Park, who provided lots of support.
The journey of becoming a teacher is not smooth.
