서울 성수동에 위치한 풀리김밥 한식당에 대해 아는가? 이 매장은 작년에 최초로 김밥 커스텀을 시작하여 한국에서 순식간에 뜨거운 관심을 받고 손님들을 이끈 식당이다. 그런데 이러한 식당이 보스턴 내에도 있다는 사실을 아는 사람은 많지 않다.
2018년부터 알스톤내 하버드 애비뉴에 자리잡은 김치파피 식당(Kimchipapi Kitchen)은 고객들이 자신의 취향과 입맛에 맞게 토핑과 소스를 선택할 수 있는 커스텀 메뉴를 제공한다. 밥 또는 면에 무려 다섯 가지의 반찬과 육류, 소스 그리고 토핑을 선택할 수 있는 개인 맞춤형 비빔밥이다. 이 외에도 떡볶이, 부대찌개 등 한식과 치토스 가루로 범벅이 된 콘도그(Hot Cheetos Korndog)와 같은 퓨전 음식도 메뉴로 내세우고 있다.
이 중 단연코 콘도그와 포케볼이 손님들 사이에서 가장 인기가 많다. 콘도그는 일반 핫도그(The Original Korndog), 감자 콘도그(Potato Korndog), 매운 치토스 가루 콘도그(Hot Cheetos Korndog) 세 종류가 있고, 내용물도 모짜렐라 치즈, 소세지, 치즈 소세지 반반 세 종류가 있다. 실제로 콘도그를 먹어본 최서경 보조교사는 겉은 바삭하지만 속은 따끈따끈한 치즈가 있어 부드럽다고 평가했고, 문서연 보조교사는 치즈가 쫀득쫀득하고 잘 늘어난다는 것을 강조하였다. 또한 매운 치토스 가루 콘도그는 생각보다 맵지 않아서 미국인들도 쉽게 먹을 수 있을 것이라는 반응을 보였다.
포케볼 중에서는 KFC bowl이 가장 인기가 많았는데, KFC bowl은 밥 위에 김치, 옥수수, 당근 등 여러 토핑과 KFC(Korean Fried Chicken)가 올려진 음식이다. 이를 놓고 보조교사들은 “김치, 치킨, 밥과 양념의 조화가 좋다”, “서로 잘 어우러지는 맛이 난다” 등 긍정적인 반응을 보이며, 특히 Kfc bowl만큼은 꼭 한 번 맛보기를 권장한다고 전했다.
김치파피 식당 가격은 학생들에게 조금 비싼 편이지만, “전체적으로 트렌디하고 풍부한 맛”을 내고 식당분위기도 세련되어 추천하고 싶다는 것이 모두의 의견이다. 김치파피의 자랑은 아무래도 개인이 취향에 따라 자신이 원하는 토핑과 소스를 선택할 수 있다는 것인데 대학생들이 자주 이용한다는 점을 고려하면 나름 젊은이들 사이에서 유행하는 곳인 것 같다. 이번 주말 점심은 김치파피에서 해보는 것은 어떨까.
A Review of the Korean Fusion Restaurant: Kimchipapi Kitchen

Are you familiar with the Fully Kimbap restaurant located in Seongsu-Dong, Seoul? Since last year, this store has been gaining lots of popularity and customers for their custom kimbaps. Many people seem to be unaware that a restaurant like this can be found in Boston, as well.
Since 2018, Kimchicapi Kitchen, located in Allston’s Harvard Avenue, has provided customers with various source and topping options to fit their tastes. Its menu includes a bibimbap or bibim-myeon style dish with the options of five kinds of banchan (side dishes), meats, sauces, and toppings to go along with either rice or noodles. Besides the custom dishes, there is also tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), budaejjigae (Army stew), and also unique fusion foods like their Hot Cheetos Korndog.
Of these, the Korndog is the most popular among their customers. Their menu inclues the Original Korndog, Potato Korndog, Hot Cheetos Korndog. Customers can choose from three fillings: mozzarella cheese, sausage, or a half-and-half. Korean School TA, Sally Choi, who tried the Korndog, described it as having a crunchy outside with warm, melted cheese on the inside. Another TA, Seoyon Moon, empphasized that the cheese inside was gooey and that the “cheese pull” was great. Among the TA’s it was also noted that the Hot Cheetos power covering the Korndog was not too spicy and would not be spicy even for those with a low spice tolerance.
Of the Poke Bowls, the most popular item was the KFC bowl, which was rice topped with kimchi, corn, carrots, and KFC (Korean Fried Chicken). Our TAs showed pleasant surprise for this dish, saying “The combination of the kimchi, chicken, rice, and dressing is delicious” and “the flavors go together so well.” They would highly recommend this item to anyone who goes to Kimchipapi Kitchen.
Kimchipapi Kitchen is on the pricier side for students, but our tasters were all in agreement that they recommend this restaurant for its “flavorful dishes and overall trendiness.” The biggest strength of this restaurant has to be that customers can choose their own toppings and dressings. Considering that the biggest demographic of customers is college students, this store seems to be on the incline for popularity among younger people. How about we give Kimchipapi Kitchen a try for lunch this weekend?
