2022년 10월 29일 코로나 이후 처음으로 자유롭게 할로윈을 즐길 수 있어 기쁜 일들만 있길 기대했던 밤은 대한민국을 발칵 뒤집은 끔찍한 밤이 되었다. 외국인뿐만 아닌 내국인들도 많이 찾는 서울의 유명한 관광지 이태원에는 언제나 그랬듯 많은 인파의 20대들이 바글바글했다. 모두 잔뜩 들뜬 마음으로 다들 할로윈을 맞이해 다양한 코스튬들을 입고 거리를 나선 것이다.
사건은 이태원역 1번 출구앞 해밀톤 호텔 서쪽 골목에서 시작된다. 길이는 40미터에 폭은 4미터 되는 좁은 골목이며, 이 사고의 시작은 이 골목 가운데쯤인 길이 5.7미터에 폭이 3.2미터 정도 되는 곳에서 생긴것이다. 대략 10도 정도 되는 경사에 많은 인파가 몰려들면서 전진하려는 사람들의 밀림에 하나 하나 넘어지기 시작한것이다. 앞으로 움직이려는 많은 사람들에 힘에 사람들은 본인 의사와 상관없이 조종돼며 밀려다녔고, 한 여성의 말에 의하면, 발이 땅에 닿지 않았는데도 불구하고 사람들 사이에 꽉 끼어 움직이고 있었다고 말했다. 이런 내리막길에 한사람이 넘어지며, 사람들은 통제할 수 없이 도미노처럼 따라 넘어졌고, 이로 인해 사람들이 겹겹이 쌓인것이다. 골목 바닥의 자재는 미끌미끌한 석재인데다, 많은 여성들이 높은 구두를 신은 것 또한 이 사고를 부른 불리했던 요소일것이다.
사고 당일 오후 6시 34분부터 오후 10시 15분까지 압사 사고 신고를 포함해 총 93건의 112 신고가 접수됐었지만, 경찰과 구급대원들은 이 수많은 사람들을 뚫도 지나가기도 한참이 걸렸다. 사람들은 강한 압박으로 산소가 부족해 호흡곤란 상태에 이르렀고, 이들을 도울 수 있는 골든 타임을 훌쩍넘긴 시간 때문에 너무나도 많은 사람들이 사망하였다. 중앙재난안전대책본부는 이태원 참사로 인해 사망자는 156명, 부상자는 187명으로 집계됐다고 밝혔다. 부상자 중에서 중상자는 33명, 그리고 경상자는 154명이였고, 여성들의 사망수가 남성들에 사망수에 2배 가까이 되는 것으로 봤을때, 이 사건은 여성들이 상대적으로 피해가 컸던 것으로 보인다.
Itaewon stampede accident

On October 29, 2022, for the first time since the Coronavirus, the night that was expected to be nothing but happy things to enjoy Halloween freely turned into a terrible night that turned South Korea upside down. In Itaewon, a famous tourist destination in Seoul that attracts not only foreigners but also locals, was as always, full of a large crowd of people in their 20s. Everyone was excited, with various costumes for Halloween, and took to the streets.
The incident began in the alley west of Hamilton Hotel in front of Exit 1 of Itaewon Station. It is a narrow alley 40 meters long and 4 meters wide, and the accident began in the middle of this alley, about 5.7 meters long and 3.2 meters wide. A large crowd gathered on a slope of about 10 degrees, and one by one they began to fall into the jungle of people trying to get going. Many people tried to move forward, and people were being pushed around without their will, and one woman said she was moving squeezed in between people, with her feet not even touching the ground. On this downhill slope, one person fell, making more people fall uncontrollably like dominoes, which caused people to pile up on the ground. The material at the bottom of the alley being slippery stone and the fact that many women wore high heels may also have been a disadvantage to this accident.
A total of 93 112 reports were received between 6:34 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. on the day of the accident, including reports of stampedes, but it took the police and paramedics a long time to get through the crowd. People became deprived of oxygen under intense pressure, causing them to have trouble breathing, and too many died because of the golden time to help them. The Central Disaster Safety Headquarters said the Itaewon disaster resulted in 156 deaths and 187 injuries. Of the injured, 33 were seriously injured and 154 were lightly injured, and given that the number of deaths among women was nearly double that of men, it appears that women were relatively affected in this case.
