스퀴드게임속의 사회적 논평

요즘 전 세계적으로 TV 미니시리즈 ‘오징어 게임’이 폭발적인 인기를 끌고있다. 나도 한국인으로서 한국에서 만든 오징어 게임, 즉 우리의 부모님 세대의 정서를 반영하는 드라마인 오징어 게임 속으로 한번 여행을 가보기로 했다.

스퀴드 게임은 넷플릭스의 거대한 플랫폼을 기반으로 전 세계 시청자를 빠르고 강하게 강타했다. 게임 콘텐츠에는 우리 부모님들 세대를 대변하는 소박하고 동심이 가득 풍기는 게임들로 이루어져 있다. 그런데 커다란 반전이 있는 것은 동심이 가득 풍기는 어린이 게임에서 갑작스러운 무시무시한 죽음의 컴피티션으로의 전환이다. 즉 동심으로의 초대로 시작해서 게임은 뜻밖의 갑작스러운 죽음으로 전환되는 잔인함, 치열한 경쟁, 배신, 욕망, 슬픔과 절망을 다룬 스토리이다. 이야기는 456 플래어인 성기훈의 관점에서 전개되는데, 엄청난 소득 불평등의 영향을 폭로하면서 ‘오징어 게임’은 억압받는 자들의 절망을 탐구하고 절망 속의 엄청난 욕심을 잘 표현한 것 같다. 게임의 현상금으로 궁핍한 참가자 들로 하여금 욕망을 극대화함으로 어린이 놀이터에서 서로 죽이는 게임을 하도록 치밀하고도 잔인하게 짜여 있다. 상상하기 어려운 잔인함을 유도하기도 하는데, 극단적으로 표현하기는 했지만, 이 드라마는 우리가 살아가는 잔혹하고도 슬픈 현실을 잘 말해 주고 있다. 경쟁을 통한 사회적 불의의 탐구는 ‘헝거게임’, ‘기생충’등의 영화에서도 잘 표현한 부분이지만, ‘오징어 게임’에서는 플레이어가 자발적으로 게임에 참여하고 게임을 선택하고 탐욕에 굴복하면서 시청자들을 더욱 슬프고 괴로움으로 몰아가는 것 같다. 시리즈에서 456명의 참가자들이 부와 사회적 이동을 추구하기 위해 어린이의 순수한 동심에서 출발해 서로를 배신하고 싸우고 죽이는 모습을 통하여 각박한 현실을 살아가는 우리의 모습을 많이 반영하기에 우리는 더욱더 이 드라마에 몰입하고 열광하는 것이 아닌가 한다. 우리의 현실을 극단적으로 잘 표현한 드라마에서 우리에게 주는 교훈을 잘 배우고 현실세계를 잘 이겨나가는 것이 정말 중요하지만, 시청자들은 드라마의 배우나 그 밖의 다른 것들에 시선이 고정되어 우리의 교훈들이 왜곡되어지는것 아닌가 하는 생각이 나로 하여금 씁쓸한 마음을 가지게 된 것을 끝으로 이야기속의 여행을 마친다.

Social Commentary on Squid Game

These days, TV mini-series Squid Game is gaining explosive popularity around the world. As a Korean, I decided to explore Squid Game, a drama that reflects the emotions of my parents' generation.

Squid Game, based on Netflix's huge platform, quickly and strongly hit viewers around the world. The game itself consists of simple and childlike activities, which represent our parents' generation. However, the big twist is the sudden transition from a children's game full of innocence to a series of terrifying deaths. In other words, the game is a story of cruelty, fierce competition, betrayal, desire, sadness and despair that begins with an invitation to childlike innocence, but ends up in an unexpected sudden death. The story unfolds from the perspective of Sung Ki-hoon, a 456-flare player, and while exposing the impact of enormous income inequality, Squid Game seems to explore the despair of the oppressed and express tremendous greed in despair well. In exchange for a reward, participants in need are carefully and brutally organized to play a game that kills them in a children's playground by maximizing their desires. This also induces cruelty that is difficult to imagine, and although expressed in an extreme way, the drama tells the disappointing reality of our lives. The exploration of social injustice through competition is also well expressed in media such as The Hunger Games and Parasite, but in Squid Game, players voluntarily participate in and select certain games, yielding to greed, driving the viewers to sadness and distress. I think we are more and more immersed and enthusiastic about this drama because the 456 participants in the series represent our harsh reality of betraying, fighting, and killing others, as well as abandoning our pure childhood innocence in the pursuit of wealth and social movement. It is extremely important to learn the lessons that are given to us in these dramas that convey our reality extremely well and help us to overcome the real world, but many viewers end the story with a bitter thought that our lessons may be distorted by fixed eyes on actors and other materialistic objects.
