뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 세종과정에 대해 알고 계십니까?
세종과정은 다문화 가정의 자녀들로 구성된 과정입니다.
그렇다 보니 세종과정에는 한국학교 행사에 참여하기가 무척 어려운 여러가지 상황들이
있습니다.
부모님중 한 분이 외국인인 경우가 많고 한국인이어도 한국어를 이해하지 못하는 경우가
많습니다.
자녀들을 한국학교에 보내는 것은 일상적인 간단한 대화를 한국어로 해보고 싶은 간절한
마음과
한국문화와 조금이라도 가까워지기 위한 바람때문입니다.
세종과정 가정들의 이러한 바람과 요구를 반영하여
세종과정에서는 올 해 한국음식문화 체험으로 5월 1일 김밥만들기 행사를 하였고
현재 한국동요 부르기 프로젝트를 진행중입니다.
5월 29일에는 1년간 배운 단어와 표현을 이용하여
자신을 소개하는 '말하기 발표'를 진행합니다.
세종과정 학생들에게 한국말로 자신을 소개한다는 것은 매우 도전이 되는 행사입니다.
제 1회 말하기 발표 대회는 세종과정에서 처음 시도하는 전체 행사로서 학부모와 선생님, 학생
모두가 함께 노력하고 있습니다.
1년간의 세종과정 행사들 중에 이번 회에는 '김밥 만들기 행사'를 소개하려고 합니다.
김밥만들기 행사에 참여한 학생과 학부모들은 슬라이드를 보며 김밥의 역사와 특징에 대해
간단히 정보를 공유하고 김밥 만드는 영상을 함께 보았습니다. 그 다음 순서로 김밥에 들어가는
여러가지 재료와 김밥을 만들 때 쓰는 도구를 알아보고 Breakout room으로 나뉘어 선생님과
함께 직접 김밥 만들기 체험을 했습니다. 김밥은 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 점심시간에 가장 인기가
좋았던 음식으로 세종과정의 학생들에게도 친숙한 음식이지만 본인이 직접 만들어보는 것은
처음인 학생들이 많았고, 부모님들께서 자녀들이 좋아하는 재료로 준비를 해주었기때문에
더욱 즐겁게 만들 수 있었던 것 같습니다.
행사 후 학부모님들께서 자녀들과 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있도록 이런 행사를 마련해준
세종과정의 선생님들에게 감사 메일과 더불어 자녀들의 사진을 보내 주는 등 행사에 대한
반응이 매우 긍정적이었습니다. 다음 해에 더욱 풍성한 행사들을 준비하여 세종과정의
가정에서 자녀들과 함께 한국문화를 체험하며 즐길 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Do you know about Sejong class in the New England Korean School?
The Sejong class is made up of children of multicultural families.
However, it seems there are a number of situations that would make it very difficult for the Sejong class to participate in Korean School events.
In some cases, one of the parents of a child may not be Korean. In many circumstances, even if both parents were Korean, they may not be able to understand the language.
Children are sent to Korean school because of an eagerness to have everyday conversations in Korean and to get familiar, even just a little, with Korean culture.
In accordance to the wishes and demands of the families of the Sejong class, the Sejong class held a Kimbap making contest on May 1st and a Korean nursery rhyme singing project is on the way as well.
On May 29th, using the words and phrases the children have learned this past year, they will do an oral presentation introducing themselves.
For the students of the Sejong class, introducing themselves in Korean is a very challenging task.
Since this first oral presentation contest is the first all-inclusive event for the Sejong class, parents, teachers, and students are all putting forth their best effort.
From all the events this past year, this time I would like to introduce the Kimbap making event.
At the Kimbap making event, the participating students and parents shared their knowledge on Kimbap history and Kimbap characteristics while looking at the slides and watched a video on Kimbap making together. Afterwards, as they learned all the different ingredients and tools used to make Kimbap, they divided into Breakout rooms and had a hands-on experience of making Kimbap with their teacher. During lunch time at New England Korean School, as Kimbap is the most popular food, it was very familiar to the Sejong class. However there were many students who made their own Kimbap for the first time, and it was even more enjoyable because of the parents who prepared all the ingredients that their children loved. After the event, the parents thanked the Sejong class teachers for letting them have such an amazing time with their kids through thank you letters and even pictures of their kids during the event. There was overwhelmingly positive feedback for this event. Next year, we hope to prepare even more amazing events so the families and children of the Sejong class can experience and enjoy Korean culture.
