2021년 2월 20일부터 tvN과 넷플릭스에서 방영한 주말 드라마 빈센조가 지난 5월 2일 성황리에 막이 내렸다. 악을 선으로 맞서 싸우던 기존 방식과는 달리 빈센조는 악의 축에 서있던 이탈리아 마피아 변호사가 한국에 있는 금 1조원 가량을 가지기 위해 한국에 방문 했지만, 그 과정에서 더 큰 악을 처단하는 속 시원한 블랙 코미디 드라마이다.
우선 가장 눈에 띄는 점은 바로 매력적인 등장인물이다. 멋있고, 섹시하며, 동시에 귀여운 빈센조 까사노 역을 맡은 송중기는 아스달 연대기 이후 화려하게 돌아와 여심을 사로잡았다. 그는 람보르기니를 타고, 부랄로 수제 양복을 입으며, 매 주말에는 오페라를 듣는 마피아 변호사 역을 완벽히 소화해냈다. 그는 오직 금가 플라자에 묻혀 있는 금을 위해 한국에 돌아왔으나 플라자 사람들과 점점 인연이 맺어지며 홍유찬 변호사와도 인연을 쌓는다. 그러다 홍유찬 변호사가 불의의 사고로 죽자 홍유찬 변호사의 딸, 홍차영 변호사와 함께 그 뒤에 있는 거대한 세력 (바벨)과 맞서 싸운다. 하지만 그가 악과 싸운다고 마피아임을 잊어선 안된다. 때때로 사람도 가차 없이 죽이는 잔혹하고 냉철한 모습을 보이지만 악을 처단할때 그의 모습은 더할 나위없이 속이 뻥 뚫리는 사이다를 선사한다.
그의 성격을 가장 잘 보여주는 것은 그의 별명 ‘배부른 고양이’다. 여기서 잠깐 그의 명대사를 들어보자. “처음 고백하는 건데, 마피아 세계에서 내 별명이 뭔지 알아? 한국말로 배부른 고양이. 배부른 고양이는 쥐를 잡으면 하루 종일 갖고 놀다가 잡아먹거든… 내가 지금까지 널 살려 둔 진짜 이유는 쥐처럼 갖고 놀기 위해서야. 이게 내 진짜 모습이거든. 잡아먹기 전 마지막으로 갖고 노는 단계. 네가 유리방 안에서 바벨타워가 무너지는 걸 보게 하는 거” (빈센조, 18회).
빈센조와 완벽한 콤비를 자랑하며 매력있는 딕션으로 사람들을 사로잡은 홍차영 변호사 (배우 전여빈) 또한 재미를 선사한다. 전여빈은 초반에 어색한 코미디 연기로 연기 논란이 일었지만 갈수록 적응해나가는 모습에 사람들도 점차 호감을 가졌다. 원래 악역을 맡은 바벨 그룹의 법무법인인 우상에서 일하던 그녀는 아버지를 잃고 정신을 차려 빈센조와 찬찬히 하지만 확실히 복수를 계획한다. 그녀는 빈센조가 지나치게 선을 넘지 않도록 중심을 잡아주며 점차 로맨스를 싹틔운다. 특히나 송중기가 한복을 입은 그녀를 보며 “너 사극 꼭해라. 너무 예쁘다, 진짜.”라는 말이 화제가 되며 다시 한 번 한복이 가장 잘 어울리는 연예인으로 손꼽혔다.
악역들의 연기 또한 눈여겨 볼만하다. 바벨 그룹에서 가짜 회장 장한서 역을 맡은 배우 곽동연은 기존의 진지한 역에서부터 벗어나 바보 역할로써 완벽한 연기 변신에 성공하였다. 진짜 회장 장한석 역을 맡은 옥택연의 밑에서 덜덜 떨던 삶에서 빈센조를 만나 환골탈태하는 모습은 시청자들로 하여금 뿌듯함을 느끼게 한다. 한편 이 드라마의 최종보스를 맡은 옥택연은 정체를 숨긴 채 귀여운 강아지 같은 모습을 보이기도 하지만 정체를 밝히는 때는 강렬한 눈빛 연기로 자신이 진짜 악(惡)임을 알렸다.
하지만 인기만큼 논란도 컸던건 사실이다. 빈센조 내에 ‘중국산 비빔밥’ PPL은 많은 논란이 되며 몇몇 시청자들은 ‘불쾌하다’는 의견을 비쳤다. 더욱이 k-드라마 (스위트홈, 킹덤 등)가 해외로 뻗어나가고 있는 지금, 외국인들이 비빔밥을 중국 음식이라 생각할 수도 있다는 우려도 존재한다. 김치가 중국의 것이라 주장하는 사상 초유의 사태가 벌어지고 있는 지금, ‘중국산 비빔밥’ PPL은 경솔한 선택이였음이 분명하다.
하지만 이러한 여러 논란에도 tvN 역대 드라마 시청률 6위를 찍으며 계속되는 인기를 누렸다. ‘빈센조’의 작가 박재범은 과거 ‘굿닥터’를 쓴 작가로 유명할 뿐만 아니라 ‘김과장,’ ‘열혈사제’ 등 사회적 문제를 반영한 드라마를 찍으며 거대한 회사나 정치인들에 맞서 싸우는 사람들을 다루었다. 범죄 검거율은 98%에 육박하지만 형 집행이 미국이나 유럽에 비해 다소 가벼운 우리나라는 피해자들이 수사를 대신 진행하는 모습을 흔히 볼 수 있다. 또한 법 테두리 바깥에 있는 여러 정치인들 및 경제인들이 존재하는 것이 사실이다. 이러한 안타까운 현실속에서 힘이 없는 우리를 대신해 화려하고 가차없는 복수를 한 빈센조는 우리 마음에 있는 정의감을 다시 한 번 불타오르게 한다.
