따스한 햇볕과 함께 봄날씨가 찾아오면 많은 한국 사람들은 벚꽃 축제를 보러 가곤 한다. 매년 3월과 4월 사이에 대한민국의 다양한 지역에서 약 200여개의 벚꽃 축제가 열린다. 가장 유명하고 인기가 많은 축제로는 창원의 진해 군항제, 서울의 여의도 봄꽃축제가 있다. 한국에서 개최하는 벚꽃축제는 한국인들이 많이 방문하지만 외국인 관광객들도 자주 찾는 관광코스이다. 벚꽃축제는 예쁜 벚나무에게 둘러싸인채 사진을 찍고 산책도 하고 가족 또는 연인과 행복한 시간을 보낼 수 있는 좋은 기회여서 인기가 많다.
벚꽃축제에서 쓰이는 벚나무 중 대부분은 일본에서 온 소메이요시노 품종이다. 이 품종은 많은 이들이 “벚꽃” 하면 생각하는 그림과 가장 비슷하고 비교적 쉽게 구하고 어렵지 않게 키울 수 있기에 많이 쓰인다. 하지만 한국산 제주 왕벚나무를 심는 경우도 있다. 원래 조선시대 때에 벚나무는 목재를 사용하려는 목적으로 나무를 심었으며 활을 만드는데에 벚나무의 껍질을 활용했었다. 팔만대장경 목판을 만들 때에도 벚나무가 자주 쓰였다. 한국에서 처음으로 벚꽃축제가 열린 것은 일제강점기 시대 때였다. 확실한 정보는 없지만 1912년 정도 부터 한국에서 “벚꽃놀이”라는 이름으로 벚나무가 아닌 벚나무에 핀 꽃을 구경하는 행사가 열리기 시작되었다고 추정된다.
벚꽃은 아름다운 연분홍빛과 흰색을 띄는 꽃으로 벚나무에 풍성하게 피어난다. 벚꽃의 꽃말은 ‘아름다운 정신(영혼)’, ‘정신적 사랑’, ‘삶의 아름다움’ 이므로 따뜻한 의미를 품고 있다. 벚꽃 한 송이만 보면 매우 작은 꽃이지만 벚나무의 가지마다 엄청나게 많은 꽃송이가 피어나기 때문에 멀리서 보면 꽃으로 가득차 보이는 것이 특징이다. 그리고 벚꽃 특유의 향기는 사람들에게 잘 느껴지지 않을 정도로 약하다.
벚꽃은 상대적으로 피었다 지는 기간이 짧은 꽃이기에 벚꽃축제에 꼭 가보고 싶다면 꽃이 가장 풍성하고 날씨가 좋은 날짜를 미리 알아보고 가는 것이 중요하다. 물론 지역과 품종, 그리고 주변 환경에 따라 달라지지만 전체적으로 보았을 때 2024년 개화시기는 3월 21일부터 4월 중순 사이일 것으로 예상된다. 한 가지에 벚꽃이 세 송이 이상 피었을 때 “개화”라고 한다. 벚꽃축제를 보러 가기 가장 좋을 때는 개화의 일주일 후인 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만 그만큼 그 시기에 굉장히 많은 사람이 몰리기 때문에 주의해야 한다. 벚나무의 80프로 이상 꽃이 피면 “만개”로 여겨진다. 2024년 만개시기는 3월 28일쯤부터 4월초 이고 중부 지방은 조금 더 늦게 4월초에서 4월 중순일 것으로 보인다.
하지만 벚꽃축제를 보려고 당장 한국으로 가는 것은 불가능하기에 찾아보니 의외로 미국에서도 벚꽃축제가 열리는데, 워싱턴 D.C.에서 열리는 “National Cherry Blossom Festival”이 가장 유명하다. 올해의 축제 기간은 3월 20일부터 4월 14일까지이다. 4주에 걸쳐 150만명 이상의 관광객이 매년 이 축제를 찾는다고 한다.
이렇게 벚꽃이 다양한 곳에서 사랑을 받는다는 것을 알 수 있다. 아름답고 화려하게 휘날리는 이 꽃잎들을 바라보며 잊지 못할 추억을 만들 수 있다. 이 아름다운 벚꽃은 추운 겨울 끝에 지친 사람들에게 봄의 희망과 따뜻함을 안겨주는 듯 하다.
Cherry Blossoms, The Start of Spring

When the warm sunshine accompanies the emergence of spring, Koreans often go to cherry blossom festivals. Annually, from March to April, around 200 festivals begin across diverse regions of South Korea. Some of the most well-known and popular are the ones in Jinhae Gunhang Festival in Changwon and the Yeouido Spring Flower Festival in Seoul. These festivals held in Korea bring many Koreans, but frequently attract tourists as well. The festivals are popular because they allow people to take pictures while surrounded by beautiful cherry trees, take strolls, and spend jovial time with loved ones.
Most of the cherry trees featured in these festivals originate from the Somei Yoshino variety from Japan. This type is favored for its resemblance to the classic image of cherry blossoms and its ease of cultivation. However, there are instances where native Korean Jeju King Cherry trees are used. Back in the Joseon Dynasty, cherry trees were initially planted for their wood, with their bark even being used to craft bows. They were also utilized in producing woodblocks for printing the Tripitaka Koreana (Palman Daejanggyeong). It is estimated that the first cherry blossom festival in Korea emerged during the Japanese colonial period, around 1912, initially to celebrate the cherry blossoms rather than the trees themselves. This was known as the “Cherry Blossom Viewing”.
Cherry blossoms bloom abundantly on cherry trees in vibrant shades of pink and white, symbolizing ‘beautiful spirit (soul)', 'spiritual love,', and 'the beauty of life'. Although each blossom itself may seem small, the sheer volume of flowers on the branches creates a mesmerizing sight from a distance. In addition, the unique fragrance of cherry blossoms is so faint that it is not easily noticeable to people.
Since cherry blossoms have a relatively short blooming period, if you want to experience a cherry blossom festival, it's important to plan beforehand and visit when the flowers are at their fullest and the weather is good. Although it might differ from environmental factors, generally, in 2024, it is expected for blossoms to flourish from around March 21st to mid-April. When three or more cherry blossoms bloom on a single stem, it's called 'blooming'. It is known that the best time to go to the cherry blossom festivals is a week from the beginning of ‘blooming’. However, for that reason, larger crowds are around this period. When over 80% of the cherry blossoms of a tree bloom, it's considered a ‘full bloom.' In 2024, the ‘full bloom’ is anticipated from late March to early April, with central regions blooming slightly later, from early to mid-April.
Unfortunately, hopping over to Korea for a cherry blossom festival right now isn't feasible. Instead, these festivals also occur in the US; among them, the 'National Cherry Blossom Festival' in Washington D.C. is the most famous. Attracting over 1.5 million visitors over the four weeks of the festival, this year’s festival is held from March 20th to April 14th.
This indicates that cherry blossoms are loved by diverse regions. Looking at the beautiful and splendid blossoms might make everlasting memories. It seems that cherry blossoms provide hope and warmth to those who are tired from the cold winter.
