가을이 다가오면서 나무에 잎이 떨어지고 날씨가 더 추워지는데 미국에서 많은 사람들이 환영할 ‘Thanksgiving’ (추수감사절)이 가까워지고 있다. 한국에서 온 2세들이 미국 문화에 동화되면서, 한국 사람들이 한국 전통 명절인 추석을 축하하듯, 미국의 한국교포 2세들은 땡스기빙을 즐기고 지낸다. 하지만, 생각보다 다수의 한인가족들이 땡스기빙을 즐기는 문화는 미국사람들이 땡스기빙을 즐기는 문화와 제법 다르다.
이를 좀더 알아보기 위해 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교에 다니는 보조교사들과 보스턴 ‘Metro Area’에 사는 한인가족들에게 이번 땡스기빙에 어떻게 지낼지 물어보았다. 설문에 참여한 총 14명의 보조교사 가족들 중, 땡스기빙에 특별히 아무 것도 하지 않는다고 29%가 답했다. 이는 2000년도의 통계이지만 91%의 미국 사람들이 추수감사절을 가장 큰 명절로 가족들과 함께 보낸다는 통계와는 확실히 대조가 된다(Gillespie, 2000). 즉, 설문에 응한 64%, 대부분의 한인 가족들은 땡스기빙데이를 대수롭지 않게 일상과 다르지 않은 날로 보내고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
반면, 땡스기빙데이를 하나의 큰 명절로 즐기는 한인 가족들도 있다. 한인 2세들이 땡스기빙데이를 즐기는 방법은 여행을 안가고 집에서 쉬면서 즐기는 것이 대부분이며 이는, 미국에 친척이 없기 때문이라고 꼽았다. 그에 반해 10명 중 9명의 미국 사람들은 온 가족이 함께 모이거나 친척집에 방문하는 것과 비교해 문화차이를 알 수 있다(Gillespie, 2000).
특히, 가족들이 자주 모인다는 미중부 지역에 비해 뉴잉글랜드 지역은 그렇지 않다.
보조교사회가 이번 땡스기빙데이에 특별한 계획이 없다면 1621년, 필그림이 왐파노아그 사람들과 “First Thanksgiving”을 한 것 처럼 터키, 크랜베리 소스, 스터핑등 풍요로운 식사를 먹으며 함께 이야기를 나눠보는 것을 추천한다.
“추수감사절이란?”이라는 질문에 공통된 답은 문화와 사는곳에 상관없이 가족과 함께 무언가에 대해 고마움을 표현하는 소중한 날로 기억한다는 것이다. 또한, “Well being” 과 “음식”에 관련된 내용으로 기억하는 것도 많았다. 땡스기빙을 어떻게 즐기든, 우리 모두 날카로운 날씨에도 따뜻한 땡스기빙을 보내길 바란다.
How do Korean-Americans Celebrate Thanksgiving?

As the autumn approaches, leaves fall from the trees, and the weather gets colder, the welcoming holiday of “Thanksgiving” draws near in the United States. Just as those in Korea celebrate Chuseok, a traditional Korean holiday, second-generation Korean-Americans in America enjoy Thanksgiving. However, the manner in which Korean-American families celebrate Thanksgiving differs from that of Americans.
To explore this further, I asked assistant teachers at the New England Korean School and families living in the Boston Metro Area about their plans for the this Thanksgiving. Among the 14 families who responded, 29% said they will not do anything special for Thanksgiving. This is in stark contrast to the 91% of Americans who celebrate Thanksgiving, according to a statistical report from 2000 (Gillespie, 2000). Hence, the results show that 64% of the 14 responding families claim to have a “normal life” on Thanksgiving.
While preserving this fact, second-generation Korean-Americans also enjoy Thanksgiving as a part of American culture. Among those asked what they do on Thanksgiving, staying at home and relaxing seemed to be quite popular. While possible that they haven’t tried other activities, it raises the question of whether second-generation Korean-Americans lack relatives to visit in the United States; in contrast, nearly all Americans (nine out of ten) mentioned traveling with family and relatives or having family come over for Thanksgiving, revealing a social difference between second-generation Korean-Americans and all Americans (Gillespie, 2000). Nevertheless, as one moves deeper into the United States mainland, such as in the Midwest, families may gather more frequently, which could explain why families in New England may meet relatively fewer. If no other plans emerge, many assistant teachers plan to reenact the “First Thanksgiving” of 1621, where the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people feasted on a rich meal, including turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and engage in storytelling.
When the question of what these stories mean arises, it’s certain that giving thanks with family will never be forgotten. Regardless of culture or location, family and friends are highly valued. Besides that, many mentioned topics also relate to “well-being” and “food.”
No matter how you choose to celebrate, let’s all have a wonderful Thanksgiving, even in the face of harsh weather.
