뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 2022학년 개학 및 개학식 개최

개교 47주년이 되는 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교가 17일 학교 강당에서 개학식을 갖고 2022학년도를 힘차게 시작했다. 2019년 이후 3년 만에 대면으로 가진 개학식라 더욱 새롭고 특별한 행사가 되었다. 박현아 교사의 개회선언을 이어 남일 교장은 환영사를 통해 “오래 간만에 학생들과 학부모님, 선생님들이 강당에 모여 대면으로 개학식을 갖게 됨을 감사하게 생각하며 이번 학년에도 열심히 공부하고 모두 즐거운 학교생활이 되기를 바란다.”고 말했다. 다음은 각 과정 선생님들과 신입생들을 소개하는 시간을 가졌고 학부모회 양원미 회장도 환영사를 통해 “모든 학생들과 선생님들을 환영한다.”고 말하고 학부모회의 사업 및 협조사항에 대해 설명했다.

이번 학년에 신입생으로 입학하게 된 손주의 할아버지로 학교를 방문한 김은한 전 이사장도 “뉴잉글랜드 한국학교가 개교 47년이 되는 동안 많은 분들의 수고하심으로 한국학교가 올곧게 성장해 올 수 있었다.”고 말한 후 여러 어려움 가운데에도 이렇게 잘 성장하고 있는 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교의 역사를 안내하며 특별히 선생님의 수고에 감동과 감사의 마음을 전했다. 그리고 학생들은 고급3과정 백두반 학생들의 선창에 맞춰 ‘우리가 지켜야할 10가지 수칙’을 서약하는 시간을 가지며 개학식을 마쳤다.

이날 학부모들은 오래 간만에 대면으로 진행된 수업이라 그런지 교실 유리창을 통해 자녀의 모습 담기에 여념이 없었다. 3-4살 아이들로 이루어진 기초-1과정에 입학한 한 신입생 학부모도 “처음으로 학교라는 공동체에 보내게 되어 걱정을 많이 했는데 의외로 아이가 어느새 친구를 사귀고 선생님의 말씀에 열중하는 모습을 보니 정말 대견했다.”고 말하고 쉽지 않은 준비였을텐데 모든 선생님들의 수고하심에 깊이 감사드린다.”고 익숙 하지않은 대면수업 환경에서도 아낌없이 노력 해주시는 선생님들께 감사의 말을 전했다.

뉴잉글랜드 한국학교는 기초준비반 및 1-2과정 (리더 김희현 교사), 기초3-4과정 (리더

이성희 교사), 초급1~3과정 (리더 주민정 교사), 중급1~3과정 (리더 김소희 교사),

고급1~3과정 (리더 류민희 교사), 세종1~4과정 & 성인1~2반(리더 박춘아 교사),

작문교육1~4부(리더 이정설 교사), 문화교육부(리더 양수연 교사) 등 8개 교육과정으로

구성되어 있는데 남일 교장은 앞으로 학부모를 대상으로도 다양한 교양 프로그램들의

재개도 할 예정이라고 밝히고 대표적인 프로그램으로는 학부모 대상 교양강좌들과 서예반, 생활영어반 등으로 앞으로도 더 다양한 프로그램들을 개발하여 제공할 계획이라고 한다.

개학식에 이어 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교의 다음 전체 행사는 10월 29일부터 2~3주간 개최되는 학부모 초청 공개수업이다. 또, 11월 중순에는 한글동화구연 & 동시암송대회, 12월 말에는 제 20회 '꿈을 그린 노래대회'를 포함한 여러가지 학교행사가 개최될 예정이다.

Korean School of New England 2022 School Year Begins with Opening Ceremony

The Korean School of New England, celebrating its 47th anniversary, held an opening ceremony in the school auditorium on September 17th for an enthusiastic start to the 2022 school year. This was a special event, as it was the first in-person opening ceremony since 2019. Following Teacher Hyun-Ah Park’s opening remarks, Principal Il Nam gave a welcoming speech, saying, "I am grateful that students, parents, and teachers have gathered in the auditorium after a long time to hold the opening ceremony face-to-face, and I hope everyone will study hard, and will have an enjoyable learning experience this year.” Following this, the teachers of each course, as well as new students, were introduced. Won-Mi Yang, president of the Parent Association, said, “We welcome all students and teachers,” and informed parents of future proceedings.

Eun-han Kim, the former chair of board of the school, whose grandchild will attend the school for the first time this year, attended the opening ceremony and said, “The Korean School of New England was able to maintain its credibility as a respectable educational institution thanks to the efforts of many people over the past 47 years.” Then, he guided us through the history of the Korean School of New England, which has developed well despite many difficulties, and expressed his deepest gratitude and appreciation for the teachers' hard work. The ceremony concluded with students pledging the '10 rules we must follow,’ and the chanting of the Baekdu (Advanced 3 course) class students.

On this day, parents could be seen busily taking pictures of their children through classroom windows, which can be attributed to these being the first in-person classes held in a long time. A parent whose child entered the Basic 1 course, which consists of 3-4 year olds, said, “In the beginning, I was very worried about sending my child to a school community for the first time, but was proud after seeing my child making friends and listening to the teacher,” and expressed gratitude to the teachers who are working hard despite the unfamiliar in-person class environment, saying, “I recognize that it must’ve been hard to prepare for everything, and am deeply appreciative of all the teachers’ efforts.”

Korean School of New England consists of 8 curricula including Basic Preparation course and Basic 1-2 courses (Leader Hee-Hyun Kim), Basic 3-4 courses (Leader Seong-Hee Lee), Elementary 1-3 courses (Leader Min-Jeong Joo), Intermediate 1-3 courses (Leader So-Hee Kim), Advanced 1-3 courses (Leader Min-Hee Ryu), Sejong 1-4 courses & Adult 1-2 courses (Leader Chun-Ah Park), Writing Education 1-4 (Leader Jeong-Seol Lee), and Culture Education (Leader Su-Yeon Yang). According to Principal Nam, there are plans to develop and offer adults various courses such as liberal arts lectures, calligraphy class, and conversational English class.

Following the opening ceremony, the next event for the Korean School of New England is an open class, which invites parents to observe their child’s class, and will be held over 2-3 weeks beginning October 29th. In addition, various school events are scheduled to be held, including the Korean Fairy Tale Storytelling & Poem Recitation Contest in mid-November, and the 20th 'Sing Your Dream Contest' at the end of December.
