코로나 이후 5년만에 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교에서 작문부 주최로 동시 암송 동화 구연 대회가 11월 23일 개최되었다. 이 대회는 4~5살의 기초과정 학생부터, 중고급과정의 학생들이 시 또는 동화 내용을 외우고 발표한 후, 심사를 거쳐 수상자가 발표되는 방식으로 진행되었다. 이전과는 다르게 올해는 번역 시 낭송 대회가 동시 암송 동화 구연 대회와 동시에 열렸다. 특히 지난 호에 게재되었던 노벨문학상 수상자 한강 작가의 시도 학생들의 선택목록에 포함되어 더욱 의미가 있었다. 이번 대회의 특징과 의미를 알아보기 위해 작문부 대표 선생님이신 이정설 선생님과 인터뷰를 진행했다.
Q. 5년만에 개최되는 대회인데 어떤 마음으로 준비하시고 계신가요?
팬데믹 이후 5년 만에 다시 이 대회를 개최하게 되어 매우 기쁘고 설렙니다. 이 대회는 한글 자모음을 배우기 시작한 기초과정의 어린 학생부터 세종과정의 학생은 물론 수년간 한국학교를 다니면서 번역을 할 수 있는 만큼의 한국어 실력을 다듬어 온 중고급 과정 학생까지 무대에 올라 한국학교에서 하며 함께 즐길 수 있는 행사입니다. 또한 이를 준비하면서 교사와 재학생, 학부모 그리고 이미 학교를 졸업하고 학교를 위해 봉사하고 있는 보조교사까지 함께 협력하고 소통하면서 우리 한국학교 커뮤니티 전체가 더욱 돈독해질 수 있는 뜻깊은 기회입니다. 그래서 많은 관심과 참여를 바라며 준비하고 있습니다.
Q. 대회는 어떤 방식으로 진행이 되고, 각 대회의 목적이 따로 있을까요? 또 전에 열렸던 대회와는 어떤 공통점, 차이점이 있나요?
대회 진행 방식은 대체적으로 예전과 같습니다. 동시 암송과 동화 구연은 우리 학교 모든 학생을 대상으로 우선 11월15일까지 신청을 먼저 하면서 자신이 발표할 시나 동화 내용을 함께 제출하고 그 내용을 외워서 대회 때 발표하는 것을 원칙으로 하고 있습니다. 자작시나 동요의 가사를 발표할 수도 있고, 창작 동화, 전래 동화 여러 장르의 동화도 가능합니다. 단 동화 구연 경우에는 5분 이하여야 한다는 시간 제한이 있습니다. 그리고 개인이나 형제 또는 친구와 함께 팀으로 참여할 수 있고 반 전체가 함께 발표할 수도 있습니다. 심사는 작문부 교사와 학부모회 임원 그리고 외부 심사위원께서 맡아 주십니다. 이전에 참가자가 많았을 때는 과정별로 금, 은, 동상을 시상했고 동시 암송과 동화 구연 각 부문에서 전체 대상 수상자가 있었습니다. 올해는 오랜만에 열리기 때문에 이 대회에 대해 잘 모르는 학생, 학부모가 많아 참가자가 예전보다 적을 수도 있지만 늘 그랬듯이 모두에게 상품, 상금 그리고 참가상이 수여됩니다. 한 가지 차이점은 이번 대회에 중고급 과정의 번역 시 낭송 부문이 있다는 것입니다.
Q. 그동안 따로 열렸던 번역 시 낭송 대회가 동시에 진행된다고 들었습니다. 혹시 함께 개최되는 특별한 이유가 있나요? 또 이 대회는 어떻게 진행되나요?
중고급 과정의 번역 시 낭송 대회는 팬데믹 때 중고급 학생이 영상으로 만들어 심사 받았던 행사였는데 대면으로 돌아와 학교 수업이 충분히 정상화 된 올해부터는 직접 낭송을 하는 것이 더 의미 있다고 판단되어 이번 대회에 함께 하기로 한 부문입니다. 그리고 사실 많은 한국학교 대화가 그렇듯 동시 암송 동화 구연 대회에 참여하는 고학년 학생이 많지가 않습니다. 하지만 고학년 학생에게도 다양한 문학 작품을 접하고 무대에서 그동안 배운 한국어 실력과 자신만의 독창성 그리고 표현력을 보여줄 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 것이 중요하다고 판단해 함께 진행하게 되었습니다. 그리고 그런 고학년 학생의 발표를 직접 보는 것 또한 어린 학생들에게 소중한 경험이 될 것입니다. 번역 시 낭송 대회 진행은 앞서 11월 9일과 16일에 걸쳐 학생 자신이 선택한 시를 번역하고 반 별로 낭송을 했습니다. 그리고 번역 50점 낭송 50점을 기준으로 심사한 결과 각 반에서 가장 우수했던 학생 3명씩 교내 대회에서 낭송을 하고 그 중에서 과정별 대상 수상자가 결정되는 겁니다. 물론 이 대회에서도 모든 참가자에게 번역상이 주어집니다.
Q. 이번 대회에 노벨문학상을 수상한 한강 작가의 작품도 포함되었다고 들었습니다. 시의 내용이 어둡고 학생들이 이해하기 어려울 수도 있음에도 불구하고 포함된 특별한 이유가 있나요? (노벨상 이외에 다른 이유가 또 있을까요?)
물론 노벨문학상을 수상함으로 인해 한강 작가의 작품에 대한 관심도가 높아진 이유도 있습니다. 하지만 <서울의 겨울>과 같은 한강 작가의 시는 어둡고 어렵다고 하기 보다 감수성이 풍부하고 상실 속에서 성장하게 되는 삶의 이치, 사랑을 갈망하고 기다리며 느끼는 감정 등을 섬세하게 묘사해 우리가 많을 것을 느끼고 공감할 수 있는 작품들입니다. 그래서 중고급 학생이 한강 작가의 작품을 통해 인간의 복잡한 감정을 이해하고 문학적 감수성을 키울 수 있다고 생각합니다.

Five years after the coronavirus outbreak, the KSNE Storytelling-Poetry Translation and Recitation Contest was held on November 23rd at the Korean School of New England. It was hosted by the KSNE writing department, and the competition was geared towards students ages 4 to 5, from the basic level to the advanced level, where they memorized and presented poems or fairy tales. Unlike before, this year's original poetry recitation contest was held at the same time as the fairy tale recitation contest. One option in the student selection list was a poem by Han Kang, who recently won a Nobel Prize in Literature, further adding meaning to the contest. To discuss the characteristics and significance of this contest, I interviewed the contest’s representative teacher of the writing department, Professor Lee Jeong-seol.
Q. How did you prepare for this competition, after 5 years?
We were very happy and excited to be hosting this competition again five years after the pandemic. This competition included young students in the basic courses who started learning Korean consonants and vowels, students in the Sejong course, as well as students in the middle and advanced courses who have been attending Korean schools for several years and have refined their Korean language skills. While preparing for this, we can also say that this was a meaningful opportunity for the entire Korean school community to grow tighter through collaboration and communication with teachers, students, parents, and assistant teachers who have already graduated from the school and are serving the school. We are hoping for a lot of interest and participation and ask for you to have fun!
Q. How was the competition conducted, and was there a separate purpose for each competition? What are the similarities and differences to the previous competitions?
The competition process was generally the same as before. All students at our school had to apply by November 15th, submit the content of a poem or story they wished to present, memorize the content, and present it at the competition. You could publish the lyrics of your own poetry or children's songs, as well as original fairy tales and traditional fairy tales of various genres. However, in the case of storytelling, there was a time limit of 5 minutes or less. You could participate as an individual, as a team with your siblings or friends, or as a whole class. The evaluation was conducted by the writing department’s teachers, parents' association executives, and external judges. Previously, when there were many participants a gold, silver, and bronze award was awarded for each course, along with overall grand prize winners in each category. This year, we expected fewer participants than before, as there were many students and parents not familiar with the contest. However, we still made sure to prepare prizes and participation awards for everyone. Lastly, one difference this year is that the contest has a translation and recitation section for intermediate and advanced courses.
Q. I heard that the poetry translation recitation competition which had been held separately, will be held simultaneously. Is there a reason why they are held together? Also, how is this contest conducted?
The translation poetry recitation competition for the middle and high school courses was an event in which middle and high school students made videos and were judged during the pandemic. However, starting this year, now that in-person school classes have returned to normal, it was decided that in-person recitations would be more meaningful. Additionally, like many Korean school contests, there were not many older students participating in the Storytelling-Poetry Recitation & Poetry Translation Contest. The Storytelling-Poetry Recitation & Poetry Translation Contest was held on November 9th and 16th, with students translating poems of their own choice and reciting them in each class. After judging based on 50 points for translation and 50 points for recitation, the three best students from each class performed a recitation, and the grand prize winner for each course was determined. And of course, a translation award was given to all participants in this competition.
Q. I heard that the work of author Han Kang, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, was also included in this competition. Is there a particular reason why the poem was included even though it is dark and may be difficult for students to understand? (Are there any other reasons besides the Nobel Prize?)
Kang winning the Nobel Prize in Literature is a significant reason why we selected author Han Kang's work. However, Han Kang's poetry, such as <Seoul Winter>, is not just “dark and difficult,” but rather rich in sensitivity and delicately describes the principles of life that grow through loss and the emotions of longing and waiting for love. Her poetry allows us to feel and empathize with many feelings and experiences. Therefore, I believe that middle and high-level students will be able to understand complex human emotions and develop literary sensitivity through the works of authors like Han Kang.
