올림픽 초반에 중국은 다른 나라들을 대표하는 여러 선수들을 실격 처리했고, 한국은 스피드 스케이팅 종목에 출전할 수 있었지만, 많은 논란이 있었다.
내가 가장 좋아하는 종목인 피겨스케이팅에도 논란이 이어졌다. 이 행사는 활기찬 스포츠와 예술이 맞물려 있고 김연아가 빛났던 종목이기 때문에 정말 좋았다. 여성 스케이팅 프로그램의 음악과 예술성을 기대했지만, 카밀라 발레바와의 사건으로 인해 산만하고 진이 빠졌다. 여자 피겨 유망주 중 일부인 김예림과 유영에게 큰 기대를 했지만 좋은 무대를 보여준 것에도 불구하고 메달을 못 탔다. 한국 남자 피겨 스케이팅 선수인 차준환은 남자 경기에서 종합 5위를 했다.
다행히도, 동계 올림픽의 실망스러운 측면 외에도, 좋은 모습들을 많이 볼 수 있었다. Chloe Kim과 Nathan Chen과 같은 많은 아시아계 미국인들은 내가 고등학교 마지막 학기 동안 계속해서 열심히 공부하도록 영감을 주었습니다: 그녀의 정신 건강 문제에도 불구하고, Kim은 집으로 또 다른 금메달을 가져왔습니다. Chen은 올림픽에서 잘해야 한다는 엄청난 압박감과 미국을 대표하는 것으로 인해 중국 네티즌들로부터 "배신자"라는 꼬리표를 겪었음에도 불구하고 그의 첫 금메달을 집으로 가져왔다.
몇 명의 개별 선수들을 것 외에, 놀랍게도 코로나19에서 돌아오는 첫 번째 올림픽이 매력적이지 못했다. 논란과 정치적 긴장은 나를 불편함을 줬고, 학교에서는 올림픽도 거의 아무도 말하지 않았다. 올림픽이나 중국을 비난하려는 것은 아니다. 단지 다양한 사건들과 결과들에 약간 실망했을 뿐이다.
또한 중국이 다른 나라의 문화적 재능을 주장하기보다는 자국의 문화적 재능에 더 신경을 쓰길 바란다. 개인적으로 한국 시민들이 중국의 주장에 과민반응을 안 하고 있다고 생각한다. 문화적인 활용은 한국을 정치적으로 위태로운 위치에 놓이게 할 수 있기 때문이다.
다음 올림픽까지 팬데믹이 완전히 가라앉고, 다음 개최국의 규제가 구체화되기를 바란다. 그리고 더 많은 한국 선수들이 정상에 올라 메달을 딸 수 있기를 기대한다.
Last year, China relabeled Kimchi as “Xinqi”, and there were several other appropriations that caused turmoil. This year with the Beijing Winter Olympics, China seemingly wants to lay claim on the Korean Hanbok: After Chinese performers made an appearance with Hanbok at the opening ceremony, Beijing defended the performance, claiming to feature certain ethnic groups in China. From its start, the Winter Olympics that I had been looking forward to for weeks gave me odd vibes.
In the early half of the Olympics, China disqualified multiple athletes representing other competing countries, and although South Korea was able to place in the speed skating events, there were many controversies surrounding them.
Controversies carried into my favorite event as well, figure skating. This event is my favorite because it meshes performing arts with a vigorous sport and also because it is the event in which Kim Yuna shone in. I was looking forward to absorbing all of the music and artistry with the ladies’ free program, but the incident with Kamila Valieva was distracting and draining at best. I had high hopes for Kim Yelim and You Young, some of the rising female figure skaters, but unfortunately, they didn’t place even with their solid performances. Cha Jun Hwan, a Korean male figure skater, placed 5th overall in his event.
Luckily, aside from the disappointing aspects of the winter Olympics, there were some perks as well. Many Asian-Americans, such as Chloe Kim and Nathan Chen inspired me to keep on working hard through my last semester of high school: Regardless of her mental health struggles, Kim managed to bring home another gold medal. Chen brought home his first gold medal even with the immense pressure he had to do well at the Olympics and being labeled as a “traitor” by some Chinese netizens for proudly representing the USA.
Other than watching out for a couple of individual athletes, I surprisingly found the first Olympics returning from COVID-19 to be underwhelming. The controversies and political tension deterred me, and at school, barely anyone mentioned the Olympics as well. As a disclaimer, I do not aim to berate the Olympics or China - I merely am slightly disappointed by the various incidents and outcomes. I also hope that China will focus on embracing its own cultural gifts instead of trying to claim those of others. I personally do not believe that South Korean citizens are overreacting to China’s claims, as cultural appropriation can put South Korea in a politically precarious position.
I hope that by the next Olympics, the pandemic will have completely subsided, and regulation by the host country will be concrete. I also look forward to seeing more Korean athletes rise to the top and win medals.
