재미 한국학교 뉴잉글랜드 지역 협의회가 개최한 뉴잉글랜드 지역 동해-독도 지명 표기 조사 활동보고 공모전에 100여명의 학생들이 참여해 경쟁을 벌였다. 이번 공모전 6-12학년 부문에서 노진, 최서경 학생팀과 이혜린 학생이 전체 대상을 수상했으며 K-5학년 부문에서는 장건 학생이 전체 대상을 수상했다.
이번 제 1회 뉴잉글랜드 지역 동해-독도 지명표기 조사 활동보고 공모전 시상식은 14일 일요일 오후 5시부터 온라인을 통해 개최될 예정이고 80여명의 학생들에게 상을 수여한다.
뉴잉글랜드 한국학교, 메인 한글학교, 북부보스톤 한국학교, 애머스트 한국학교 및 개인 참가자 등 모두 102명의 학생들이 외교부 및 보스턴 총영사관의 후원으로 처음으로 열리는 이번 대회에 참가 하였고 그림일기(K-2), 포스터(3-5), 에세이(6-8), Presentation/발표(9-12학년) 등 각 학년 별로 4개 부문으로 나우어 진행 되었다.
협의회 오인식 이사장은 “이 행사는 2021년 봄부터 교사, 학부모 및 학생들을 대상으로 실시된 동해 명칭 및 독도 영유권 등에 관련된 강연회의 마지막 행사였다”고 말했다.
오 이사장은 또 “이번 행사가 '봄 역사강연 시리즈에 이어서 학생들이 직접 참여하는 조사 활동 행사의 대미를 장식할 수 있게 됨을 감사하게 생각한다.”고 덧붙였다.
협의회 남일 회장은 “옛부터 우리는 우리의 이름인 '동해'를 사용 했으며, 우리의 땅인 '독도'를 우리의 영토라고 부르는 것이 당연한 일”이라며 “일본해, '다케시마'라고 우기는 일본의 억지 주장에 맞서 '우리의
것'을 스스로 지키고자 열심히 조사하고 시정하고자 노력한 뉴잉글랜드 지역 한인 2세들과 지도 교사 및 학부모님들께 깊이 감사의 마음을 전한다.”고 감사를 표했다.
이번 대회의 전체대상 부문의 심사를 맡은 주성재 경희대 교수는 "쉽지 않은 주제였음에도 열심을 다해 참가하고 감동의 작품들을 만들어 낸 2세들의 열정을 칭찬하고 싶다."고 심사평을 전했다.
심사를 담당한 교사들도 일부 참가자들은 선생님의 지도로 학급 전체가 단체 프로젝트로
참가하기도 하고 도서관 및 여러 공공 기관을 방문하여 자료를 찾고 연구하며 잘못된 부분을 찾아 시정하고자 노력한 모습들은 더욱 감동이었다고 입을 모았다.

준비 등의 지원을 위해 수고해 주신 총영사관 직원 준비팀 여러분들께도 감사의 말씀을 드리고 다시 한 번 참가 학생들과 교사 및 학부모 여러분께 감사의 말씀을 드린다”고 밝혔다.
대회 수상자는 표와 같고 상장과 상품은 참가 학교에 우편으로 전달된다. 협의회에서는 이번 대회에 출품된 학생들의 작품을 모아 작품 전시회를 개최하는 방안을 고려 중이다.

About 100 students participated and competed in the New England Region East Sea-Dokdo Toponymization Report Contest held by the New England Regional Council of Korean Schools in America. In the 6th-12th grade category of this contest, student teams Noh Jin, Choi Seo-kyung and Lee Hye-rin won the grand prize overall, and in the K-5 grade category, Jang Geon won the overall grand prize.
The Council will hold the 1st New England East Sea-Dokdo Geographical Survey Report Contest Awards Ceremony online starting at 5 pm on Sunday, the 14th, and award prizes to about 80 winning students.
The first competition, sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General of Boston, New England, Maine Korean School, Northern Boston Korean School, Amherst Korean School and individual participants participated in the first competition. The contest was divided into 4 categories for each grade: Picture Diary (K-2), Poster (3-5), Essay (6-8), Presentation/Presentation (Grade 9-12).
“This event was the last event in a series of special lectures on the name of the East Sea and sovereignty over Dokdo, which were held for teachers, parents, and students from the spring of 2021,” said In-Sik Oh, chairman of the council.
Chairman Oh also added, "As this event has a great meaning as 'investigation and reporting', I am grateful to be able to decorate the end with an event in which students directly participate following the spring history lecture series."
“It is natural to call and write our name ‘East Sea’ as the East Sea since ancient times, and to call our land, ‘Dokdo’, our territory,” said Nam Il, chairman of the council. I would like to express my deep gratitude for the guidance and encouragement of second-generation Koreans in New England, advisors, and parents who have worked hard to investigate and correct themselves in order to protect 'ours'.”
Professor Joo Seong-jae of Kyunghee University, who was in charge of the judging of the grand prizes of this competition, said, "I want to praise the enthusiasm of the second generation who participated with enthusiasm and created impressive works even though it was a difficult topic."
One of the teachers in charge of the screening also said that some participants participated in a group project with the whole class under the guidance of the teacher, visited the local library as well as public buildings to find and study materials and to find and correct errors offline and online. It was agreed that the hard work was even more impressive.

Competition winners are the same as tickets, and certificates and prizes are mailed to participating schools. The council is considering a plan to hold an exhibition of works by collecting the works of students submitted to this competition.
