설날은 음력 1월 1일 새해의 시작을 뜻한다. 영어로는 Lunar New Year는 새로운 한해의 시작을 뜻한다. 설날에는 주로 가족과 모여 세배하고, 제사도 지내고, 음식을 먹고, 놀이도 한다.
명절때 가족들과 모이면 다양한 놀이들과 활동을 즐긴다. 설날에 즐길수있는 대표적인 전통, 민속놀이 들은 제기차기, 팽이 돌리기, 윷놀이, 등이 있다. 이런 놀이들은 옛날 한국 역사에서 유래하였다. 예를 들어 윷놀이의 기본 규칙에는 돼지, 개, 양, 소, 말과 같은 그때당시에는 많이 농사하며 키웠던 동물들이 포함되어있다. 이와 비슷하게 전통놀이 들은 대부분 아주 옛날에 주변에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 재료나 물건을 써서 놀이들을 만들고 즐길수도 있다. 설날에 즐길 수 있는 다른 전통놀이들은 제기차기와 공기놀이도 있다. 이 두 놀이들도 준비물이 많이 필요하지 않다. 제기차기는 축구와 비슷하게 발로 제기를 차서 땅에 안닿고 몇번이나 찰 수 있나 보는 놀이다. 그리고 공기놀이는 처음 놀이로 인정 받은게 조선시대의 학자, 이규경의 오주연문장전산고에서이다. 공기는 조약돌이나 공깃돌, 던질수 있는 자그만 돌같은 물건만 있으면 할수있다.
이런 놀이를하며 입는 의상을 한복이다. 한복은 한국의 전통 의상이고 설날에나 추석같은 명절에 입는다. 한복의 색깔과 무늬는 정말 다양하다. 옛날에는 계급에따라 한복에 색깔과 무양이 다르기도했다. 설날에는 주로 떡국을 먹는다. 떡국떡은 가래떡으로 만들어졌지만, 썰면 엽전처럼 생겨서 돈을 많이 벌라는 뜻을 갖고있다. 새해에 떡국을 먹으면 한살을 더 먹는다는 뜻을 담기도 한다.
설날은 새해를 환영하며 모두가 다같이 모여서 축하할 수 있는 명절이다. 설날은 우리나라의 가장 큰 명절중 하나이고 오랜만에 어른들을 찾아뵙고 인사하고 가족들이 곳곳에서 모여 즐거운 시간을 갖는 날이다.

Lunar New Year, known as Seollal in Korean, marks the beginning of the new year on the lunar calendar. During Seollal, families gather to perform ancestral rites, enjoy traditional foods, and engage in various games and activities.
One of the most representative traditional games enjoyed during the holiday season is jegichagi (shuttlecock kicking game), paengi nori (spinning top game), yut nori (traditional board game), and more. These games have their origins in ancient Korean history, with yutnori incorporating elements such as pigs, dogs, sheep, cows, and horses, which were then commonly raised for agricultural purposes. Similarly, many traditional games were devised and enjoyed using readily available materials or objects from the surrounding environment. Other traditional games that can be enjoyed during Seollal include jegi chagi (shuttlecock kicking game) and gonggi nori (game using small stones or pebbles), which do not require many materials to play. Jegi chagi involves kicking a shuttlecock with the foot to keep it in the air as many times as possible, similar to playing soccer. Gonggi nori originated from the scholar Lee Gyu-gyeong's book "Ojuyeonmunjangjeonsango" during the Joseon Dynasty, and can be played with easily accessible small stones or pebbles.
Traditional Korean attire, called "Hanbok," is typically worn during these games and activities. Hanbok is worn during special occasions, such as Seollal and Chuseok (Korean harvest festival). Hanbok comes in various colors and patterns. In the past, the color and pattern of hanbok also varied according to social class. Tteokguk, a traditional Korean rice cake soup, is commonly eaten during Seollal. Tteok (rice cake) used in tteokguk is made in a cylindrical shape, resembling ancient coins, symbolizing wishes for wealth and prosperity in the new year. Eating tteokguk on New Year's Day is also believed to add one more year to a person's age.
Seollal is a significant holiday in Korea, where everyone comes together to celebrate the new year, visit and greet elders, and spend joyful time with family members. It is one of the biggest traditional holidays in Korea and a time for family reunions and celebration.
