지난 2022년 10월 5일 Boston University Metcalf Trustee Center에서 주보스턴 총영사관이 주최한 개천절 리셉션이 3년 만에 대면으로 열렸다. 이번 개천절 행사에는 매사추세츠 하원의원의 택키 챈과 로드아일랜드 하원의원의 존 에드워즈를 비롯해 보스턴에 주재하는 각국 외교관과 한인사회의 주요 인사 150여 명이 참여했다.
이번 행사는 필하모니아 보스턴의 연주와 함께 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 합창단의 애국가와 미국의 성조기 제창으로 시작되었다. 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 합창단은 이전 노래대회에서 수상 경력이 있는 17명의 학생으로 구성되어있다.
유기준 총영사가 보스턴에 부임한 지 22개월 만에 열린 첫 대면 개천절 행사에서 유 총영사는 “개천절은 한민족의 정체성과 자부심”이라며 최근 윤 대통령과 바이든 대통령의 만남으로 한국과 미국의 동맹이 어느 때보다 깊다고 강조했다.
팬데믹 이전 3년 전에 있었던 개천절 행사에도 참여했던 택키 챈 하원의원은 기생충의 아카데미 수상과 오징어게임의 에미상 수상 등 문화 수출의 중요성과 문화 공유를 통해 우리가 얼마나 서로 가까운 사이인지를 알게 되고 다른 문화에 대한 이해를 넓혀 서로 간의 격차를 좁힐 수 있게 됐다고 말했다.
매사추세츠 의원들처럼 자신도 한국 음식을 좋아한다는 존 에드워즈 하원의원은 “작은 나라였지만 6~7가지의 김치 맛을 보았다”고 자신의 한국 방문 경험담에 대한 이야기를 나눴다. 또한 그는 로드아일랜드주에서도 매년 8월 15일 일제에서 독립한 한국의 광복절을 기념하고 있다고 알리며 로드아일랜드 한인들이 지역사회에 많은 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있다고 말했다.
개천절은 기원전 2333년 단군이 고조선을 건국한 것을 기념하는 날이다. 민간에서 ‘10월 3일’에 개천절을 기념하기 시작한 이후 개천절이 국경일로 선포된 것은 일제강점기 때이다. 독립운동가 나철은 1909년부터 음력 10월 3일을 ‘개천절’이라 부르기 시작하며 하늘에 제를 올리고 매년 행사를 열었고, 대한민국 임시정부는 3.1운동이 일어난 1919년에 음력 10월 3일을 우리나라의 국경일로 선포하고 축하 행사를 열었다. 그 후 1949년에 문교부는 양력 10월 3일을 개천절로 정했다. 개천절은 일제 강점기 때 ‘우리 모두 단군의 자손이며 반만년 유구한 역사를 가진 민족’이라는 자긍심을 지켜주었으며, 오늘날까지 널리 해외에서 대한민국의 건국일 (National Foundation Day)로 글로벌 시대에 우리의 정체성을 형성하는 역할을 하고 있다.
In person National Foundation Day event held first time in three years

On October 5th, 2022, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea hosted a reception
of National Foundation Day of Korea at Boston Metcalf Trustee Center, for the first time in
the past 3 years. Over 150 diplomats from various countries and key figures from the
Korean community in Boston, including Takki Chan of Massachusetts Congressman and
John Edwards of Rhodesia Island Congressman, attended this event.
The festival opened with the national anthem of the New England Korean School Choir -
which consisted of 17 students who have won awards in previous singing competitions -
and a glorious performance of the Philharmonia Boston.
At the first face-to-face National Foundation of Korea Day event held 22 months after
Consul General Yoo Ki Jun took office in Boston, Consul General Yoo proudly emphasized,
“National Foundation Day of Korea is the identity and pride of the Korean people”.
Massachuessetts Congressman, Takki Chan, who participated in this festival 3 years before
the pandemic, recognized how close the gap between the cultures of Korea and America
has become, through the exportations of culture, such as winning the Academy Award for
Parasite and the Emmy Award for the famous Netflix show, Squid Game.
Congressman John Edward, who was known for liking Korean foods like Massachusetts
lawmakers, shared his experience in Korea, “It was a small country, but I tasted 6 or 7 kinds
of Kimchi.” He also announced that Rhodesia Island has been commemorating Korea’s
Independence Day on August 15th every year, and that many Koreans in Rhodesia Island
are having a lot of positive impact on the local community.
National Foundation Day of Korea, called ‘GaecheonJeol’ in Korea, is a day to commemorate the foundation of Gojoseon by Dangun in 2333 BC. It was founded during the Japanese colonial period that the GaecheonJeol declared a national holiday after the private sector started celebrating it on October 3rd. Independence activist Na Cheol started calling the 3rd day of the lunar calendar GaecheonJeol in 1909 and held an annual event to raise an ancestral rite to the sky. In 1949, the Ministry of Education designated October 3rd in the Gregorian calendar as the National Foundation Day. This day protects the pride of being ‘all descendants of Dangun and a nation with a long history for half a millions years’, and has been playing a huge role in shaping our identity as Koreans in the global era.
