지난 3월 29일, 재미한국학교 뉴잉글랜드 지역협의회 주최로 2025 교사 연수회 및 사은회가 개최됐다. 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교를 포함한 뉴잉글랜드 지역에 있는 여러 한국학교들의 교사와 관계자들, 총 200여명이 참석해 보스턴 장로교회 본당을 채웠다.

남일 회장의 개회사를 이어 보스턴 장로교회의 장성철 목사는 “미래의 다리역할을 해주시는 교사 여러분께 감사하다”며 “보스턴 장로교회에서 3년동안 연수회를 열 수 있게 되어 영광”이라고 전했다. 오인식 이사장과 지은석 교육영사 또한, “나라와 국가의 전통을 유지하기 위해 일하고 봉사하는것은 대단한 일”이라며 더 좋은 교육의 기회에도 감사를 전했다. “오늘을 통해, 교육에 대한 더 창의적이고 생산적인 정보와 성과를 얻기를 기원한다”며 개회식을 마쳤다.

이어, NE시민 협회장 린다 챔피언 변호사와 허봉랑 선교사의 전체강연이 열렸다. 린다 챔피언은 ‘한국인들이 할 수 있는 일은 무엇인가’에 대해 나누며 자국의 존재감을 확대하는 것과 그 문화를 기념하고 한국어를 배울 수 있는 기회를 제공하는 공동체가 됐으면 하는 마음을 전했다. 요즘 더 자주 찾아볼 수 있는 가상 수업도 있듯이, 한국어를 배울 수 있는 기회와 한국어를 배우고 싶어하는 학교 아이들의 자발적인 선택이 더 많아졌으면 좋겠다며, “한국어가 매사추세츠 교육 시스템으로 확장할 수 있는 기회가 됐으면 좋겠다” 했다. 더불어, 이 일을 실현하는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다 알리며, “협회에 꼭 연락해 달라”고 당부했다.

두번째 강연으로 허봉랑 선교사는 교사로서의 자질에 대해 나눴다. “바로 알고 바로 가르치자”, “학생들을 우리의 자녀처럼 가르치자”, 그리고 “어리고 순진한 제자들에게 진심으로 열심히 가르치자” 등 교사가 먼저 진실되어야하고 학생들의 존경을 받아야한다는 강연을 펼쳤다. “한글뿐만 아니라 생각과 정신을 잘 가르치는게 교사다”라며 66년을 걸어온 허봉랑 선교사의 교사로서의 자질을 이야기했다.

전체강연 이후, 이정설 교육간사의 사회로 우수교사 표창 및 장기근속상 표창이 이어졌다. 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교에서는 이보람 교사(금도끼반), 서이연 교사(신라2반), 김한길 교사(고려반), 이근영 교사(작문교육1), 그리고 최유나 교사(차세대 교사)로 5명의 교사들이 우수교사 표창 수상을 했다. 장기근속으로는 이소정 교사와 류민희 교사가 10년 근속, 김혜련 교사가 15년 근속, 유미선 교사가 20년 근속을 해, 각각 장기근속 표창을 수상했다. 오랜 교사들의 노고와함께 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 남일 교장은 개교 50주년 학교 표창식을 수상하며, 보스톤코리아 장명술 대표의 후원금 전달식을 이어갔다.

교사 연수회를 마치며, 국악 연주가인 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 사물놀이 김경선 교사가 가야금 산조 축하공연을 연주했다. 김경선 교사의 자녀 김주현 군 또한 장구를 맡아, 최옥삼류 가야금 산조 중 "중모리, 중중모리"를 고운 한복과 함께 아름답게 선사하여 참가자들의 큰 박수갈채를 받았다.

늦은 오후부터 열린 사은회는 준비된 푸짐한 한식과 손연주 간사의 진행으로 여러 게임과 제기차기, 공기놀이 등 민속놀이를 즐겼다. 어린 아이들까지 남녀노소 모두 참여한 게임들은 가득 준비된 상품들을 타갈 수 있는 기회가 있어 더욱 치열하고 승부욕 넘치는 열정을 볼 수 있었다. 예쁘게 꾸며진 보스턴 장로교회 친교실에서 교사연수회에 참석한 모든 교사 및 가족들이 모여 같이 웃고 떠들며 더 친해질 수 있는 시간이었다.

사은회의 끝을 장식한 우수 배우자상 시상식과 래플 추첨이 다음 이어졌다. 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 우수 배우자상은 장은아 배우자(기초 1-2과정), 박보람 배우자(초급 1-3과정), 박춘아 배우자(세종 1-6/성인반), 이정설 배우자(작문교육부), 그리고 김경선 배우자(문화교육부)가 수상했다. 이를 마지막으로 참가한 200여명의 교사와 관계자들에게 아주 알차고 뜻깊었던 2025 교사 연수회 및 사은회가 막을 내렸다.

다가오는 5월 3일, ‘2025년도 NE지역 글짓기 & 손글씨 대회’에 이어 5월 24일에는 사생대회가 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 Oak Hill 파크에서 열릴 예정이다. 협의회측은 남은 하반기 행사에도 각 학교의 많은 학생들이 참가해주길 바란다고 전했다.

On March 29th, the New England Chapter of the National Associations for Korean Schools hosted the 2025 Teacher Training Workshop and Appreciation Banquet. More than 200 teachers and staff from various Korean schools in the New England region, including the Korean School of New England, attended the event and filled the main hall of the Boston Presbyterian Church.

Following the opening remarks by President Il-nam, Pastor Jang of the Korean Presbyterian Church in Greater Boston expressed his gratitude to the teachers, saying, “I appreciate all of you for serving as bridges to the future.” He also stated, “It is an honor to host this workshop at Korean Presbyterian Church for three years.” Chairman In-sik Oh and Consul of Education Eun-seok Ji also conveyed their appreciation, saying, “Working and volunteering to preserve the nation's traditions is a remarkable endeavor.” They expressed gratitude for better educational opportunities and concluded the opening ceremony. “We hope that we can provide more creative and productive insights and achievements in education.”

Next, main lectures were delivered by an attorney and the president of the NE Citizens Association, Linda Champion, and missionary Bong-rang Heo. Linda Champion spoke on the topic of "What Can Koreans Do?", delivering her hope of fostering a community that expands the presence of Korea, celebrates its culture, and creates opportunities for learning the Korean language. As virtual classes are becoming more common, she shared her aspiration that more students would voluntarily choose to learn Korean and said, “I hope this becomes an opportunity to integrate Korean into the Massachusetts education system.” Furthermore, informing that she can help in achieving this, she requested, “Please reach out to the association for support in making this a reality.”

In the second lecture, missionary Heo Bong-rang spoke about the qualities of a teacher. She emphasized that teachers should "know correctly and teach correctly," "teach students as if they were our own children," and "teach young and innocent disciples sincerely and passionately." She stressed that teachers must first be genuine and earn the respect of their students.

Reflecting on her 66-year journey as an educator, she stated, "A teacher is not only someone who teaches the Korean language but also someone who nurtures thoughts and spirit."

After the main lectures, the awards ceremony for outstanding teachers and long-term service recognition was conducted by Educational Secretary Jungsul Lee. Five teachers of the Korean School of New England received the Outstanding Teacher Award: Boram Lee (Geumdokki Class), Yee-Yeon Soh (Shilla 2 Class), Hangil Kim (Goryeo Class), Keunyoung Lee (Composition Education 1), and Yuna Choi (Next-Generation Teacher). For long-term service awards, So Chong Yi and Minhee Ryu were recognized for 10 years of service, Hye-Roun Kim for 15 years, and Misun Yu for 20 years. Along with honoring the dedication of long-serving teachers, Korean School of New England Principal Il Nam received a school commendation for the institution's 50th anniversary. The ceremony continued with a sponsorship fund presentation by Myongsool Chang, the representative of Boston Korea.

As the teacher training workshop concluded, Korean traditional music performer and Korean School of New England’s samulnori instructor, Kyungsun Kim, performed a celebratory Gayageum Sanjo recital. Her son, Joohyun Kim, joined her with the Janggu drum, beautifully presenting the "Jungmori" and "Jungjungmori" sections of Choi Ok-sam style Gayageum Sanjo in an elegant hanbok, earning a round of enthusiastic applause from the audience.

The appreciation banquet, which began in the late afternoon, featured an ample Korean meal and was hosted by Secretary Yeonjoo Son. Attendees enjoyed various traditional games such as Jegichagi and Gonggi, with people of all ages, including young children, actively participating. The prizes made the games even more thrilling and exciting. Held in the beautifully decorated fellowship hall of Boston Presbyterian Church, the event provided teachers and their families a chance to laugh, chat, and bond with one another.

To conclude the appreciation banquet, an Outstanding Spouse Award ceremony and a raffle draw followed. The New England Korean School recognized outstanding spouses, including spouses of Eunah Jang (Basic 1-2 Course), Boram Park (Beginner 1-3 Course), Choonah Park (Sejong 1-6/Adult Class), Katherine Lee (Composition Education), and Kyungsun Kim (Cultural Education).

On May 3rd, the ‘2025 New England Regional Essay & Handwriting Contest’ will be held, followed by the drawing contest on May 24th at the Oak Hill Park of the Korean School of New England. The National Association for Korean School New England Chapter expressed hope for many students from each school to participate in the remaining events held in the second half of the year.
