2024학년도 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 학부모 초청 공개수업은 1차 10월 26일, 2차로 11월 2일에 마무리되었다. 기초, 초급, 세종, 중급, 고급 과정 수업 뿐만 아니라 다양한 문화 수업들도 공개수업을 진행했다. 교사들이 공개수업을 어떻게 준비했는지를 알기 위해 초급 과정 신라 2반의 서이연 교사, 중급 과정 고려반의 김한길 교사, 세종 과정 복숭아반의 이경애 교사, 기초 3과정 은도끼반의 조은정 교사와 인터뷰를 진행했고, 학부모들의 공개 수업 참여 경험을 듣기 위해 흥부반, 은도끼반, 달님반 아이들의 학부모들을 만나보았다. 또한 남일 교장과의 인터뷰에서 전체적인 공개수업 결과와 반응을 들어보았다.
교사 인터뷰
Q. 이번 공개수업을 준비하시면서 가장 중점에 둔 부분은 무엇인가요?
서이연 교사: 먼저 학생들과의 소통, 그리고 자연스러움에 중점을 두었어요. 아이들의 부모님이 계시지만 수업이 딱딱하지 않게 가볍게 진행되도록 했고, 학생등이 어린아이들인만큼 더욱 집중을 잃지 않게 하려고 했던 것 같아요.
김한길 교사: 학생들이 어색함을 느끼지 않도록 평소와 비슷하게 수업을 진행하려고 노력했어요. 공개수업을 통해 학부모분들께 평소 어떻게 수업이 진행되는지 잘 알려드린 것 같아요.
이경애 교사: 학부모분들이 자녀들이 현재 어느 정도 레벨의 수업을 듣고 있고 참여하고 있는 지에 대한 이해가 필요하다고 생각합니다. 수업 자체를 보여드리는 것도 있지만 어떤 개선점이 필요한지 알려드리고 싶었어요.
Q. 학생들이 수업에서 적극적으로 참여하도록 하는 비결이 있다면 무엇인가요?
서이연 교사: 가장 많이 사용하는 방법은 흥미유발인 것 같아요. 매번 새로운 내용을 배울수록 재밌어한다는 것을 보았고, 특히 다양한 게임들을 사용하면 학생들이 더욱 적극적이었어요.
김한길 교사: 굉장히 많이 있는데 일단 저희 고려반만의 규칙을 사용하는 게 도움이 돼요. 예를 들면 수업시간에 떠드는 친구들은 마지막에 혼자 발표나 노래를 해야 하는 벌칙도 있어요. 그리고 또 모든 학생들이 발표 할 수 있는 기회를 주고 싶어서 가끔 무작위로 질문을 한다거나 해서 긴장감도 살짝 주려고 해요.
조은정 교사: 어린 학생들이니 보상을 주는 방법이 가장 좋은 것 같아요. 스티커나 사탕 같은 보상을 좋아하는 학생들이 많아서 그걸 얻으려고 많이 참여하더라고요.
Q. 한국어를 처음 배우는 학생들을 위해 특별히 고려하는 교육 방식이 있나요?
서이연 교사: 저희 반은 한국어를 잘하더라도 영어가 조금 더 편한 친구들이 많다보니, 눈높이, 관점에 집중하는 게 중요하다고 생각했어요. 학생들의 관심사를 아는 게 많이 도움이 되었어요.
김한길 교사: 수업을 2개국어로 진행하고, 저희 반 학생 모두가 많이 배웠으면 좋겠어서 잘 기다려주는게 중요한 것 같아요. 특히 이런 학생들은 언어의 혼동이 오면서 과부하가 올 수도 있다고 생각해서 시간이 걸리더라도 직접 참여하는 걸 유도하고 있어요.
이경애 교사: 세종 과정인 만큼 영어가 편한 친구들이 많으니 퀴즈나 만들기를 수업에 많이 사용해요. 학생들의 나이가 또 초등저학년에서 중학생들까지 있다보니 공통적으로 재미있어 하는 부분을 찾으려고 해요.
Q. 공개수업을 통해 학부모들과 소통하면서 얻는 점이나 보람이 있다면 말씀해 주세요.
조은정 교사: 가끔 학생들이 숙제를 해오지 않거나 준비되지 않은 상태로 수업에 참여한다고 생각했는데 공개수업 이후 많은 학생들의 태도가 발전된 것 같아요. 공개수업이 좋은 영향을 끼친것 같아요.
이경애 교사: 학생들이 전보다 훨씬 시험에 준비되어서 나타난게 가장 큰 것 같아요. 학부모분들이 자녀의 좋은 점 그리고 또 부족한 점을 인지하셔서 학생들이 집에서도 연습을 많이 하는 것 같아요.
김한길 교사: 한 학부모 분에게서 이메일을 받았는데 유니크한 수업 방식, 그리고 한 단어를 알려주더라도 다양한 뉘앙스로 가르침이 자녀에게 많은 도움이 된 것 같다고 말씀해주셔서 보람이 컸습니다.
학부모 인터뷰
Q. 이번 공개수업에 참여해보시니 어떤 점이 인상 깊으셨나요?
흥부반 학부모: 제가 자녀의 수업시간에 참여할 수 있다는 점이 많은 것을 알려준 것 같아요. 어떻게 수업이 진행되는지 그리고 자녀가 잘 배우고 있는지를 확인할 수 있게 되었어요.
은도끼반 학부모: 선생님이 열심히 수업하시는 모습이 일단 인상 깊었어요. 아이들을 위해 많이 노력 하시는 것 같더라고요.
Q. 학교에서 배운 내용이 가정에서도 적용되는 모습이 있나요?
달님반 학부모: 원래 한국어를 아예 하지 못했는데 한국학교에서 배운 단어들이나 문장들을 저한테 자랑스럽게 보여주는 경우가 많아졌어요. 아직 배워야할게 많지만 벌써 발전한 모습이 보여서 좋아요.
흥부반 학부모: 숙제를 하면서 직접 배웠던 내용을 되새김질 하다보니 항상은 아니더라도 가끔 다양한 단어를 사용하는게 놀라웠어요. 저희 집은 3개국어를 사용해서 많이 혼란스러움에도 아이가 열심히 배우는 모습이 좋았어요.
Q. 수업에서 특히 칭찬하고 싶은 부분이나 개선되면 좋을 부분이 있으면 말씀해 주세요.
흥부반 학부모: 그림일기 숙제를 자녀가 수업시간에 발표한다는 점을 몰랐었는데 만약 그런 발표가 있을거라고 먼저 들었으면 좀 더 준비를 했을 수 있었을 거 같아요.
달님반 학부모: 어떤 수업들은 합반을 하다 보니까 전체 학생들이 많아지면 많아질수록 저희 아이처럼 특히 어린 친구들은 참여하기가 가끔 어려운것 같다고 느꼈어요. 작은 규모의 수업이 어떨때는 좋은 것 같아요.
Q. 자녀가 한국어 학습을 통해 긍정적 변화를 보였다거나 성장했다고 느낀 적이 있으신가요?
은도끼반 학부모: 한국학교를 다니면서 자녀가 많은 것을 배운 것 같아요. 한국 문화를 잊지 않고 아이덴티티를 직접 알아가는 과정이 정말 소중하다고 생각해요.
흥부반 학부모: 자녀가 본인의 한국인 정체성을 잃지 않게 좋은 경험을 많이 안겨준 것 같아요. 앞으로도 더욱 성장할 수 있을것 같아요.
남일 교장 인터뷰
Q. 공개수업을 통해 학부모님들께 학교 교육의 어떤 면모를 보여드리고 싶으셨나요?
남일 교장: 공개수업이 자주 일어나지 않는만큼 더욱 학부모들에게 한글학교의 좋으신 선생님들과 수업을 보여드리고 싶었습니다. 다른 미국 공립학교에서는 대부분 5분에서 10분정도 진행되는 공개수업이 한글학교에서는 훨씬 긴 시간동안 진행되는 만큼 더욱 자세히 수업 진도, 계획, 진행과정을 알려드릴 수 있었던 것 같습니다.
Q. 학부모들의 피드백 중에서 특히 기억에 남는 내용이 있었나요?
남일 교장: 설문조사에 참여한 대부분의 학부모분들이 만족하신 것 같아 다행이라고 생각했습니다. 많은 분들이 한글학교의 훌륭한 교사진을 칭찬했고 학생들의 한국어 실력이 매 학기 꾸준히 발전했다고 느끼신 분들이 많았습니다.
Q. 내년에는 어떤 새로운 교육 프로그램을 계획 중이신지 궁금합니다.
남일 교장: 현재 성인반, 세종반과 같은 몇몇 반들을 조금 더 세분화해 더 많은 이중언어 과정 수업들을 통해 폭 넓은 교육 과정을 제공할 수 있도록 개선을 염두해 두고 있습니다.

The 2024 open house for parents of New England Korean School concluded with two successful sessions—one on October 26th and another on November 2nd. In addition to numerous leveled-courses, various cultural classes were also open to the public. To find out how teachers prepared for these classes, we interviewed several of the teachers participating in this program: Seo Yi-yeon, who teaches a beginner course called Silla; Kim Han-gil, who teaches an intermediate course called Koryo; Lee Gyeong-ae, who teaches the Sejong peach class; and Cho Eun-jeong, who teaches the basic Eundoki class. We also met with parents of children in Heungbu, Eundokki, and Dalnim classes to hear about their experiences participating in the open house. To learn more about how teachers prepared and what both students and parents took away from these experiences, we conducted an interview with the principal.
Teacher Interviews
Q. What did you focus on most while preparing for this open house?
Seo Yi-yeon: The first thing the students focused on was communicating naturally. I tried to keep the class light and fun for the young children, to keep them engaged, while also being mindful of the parents present in the class.
Kim Han-gil: I aimed to make the class feel as normal as possible so students wouldn't feel awkward. I think we gave parents a good idea of how classes are usually conducted through this open house.
Kyeong-ae Lee: I wanted to give parents a clear understanding of their children's current learning level and show areas where they need improvement. So while I wanted to display the class environment, I also highlighted places where the student can improve.
Q. What is your secret to getting students to actively participate in class?
Seo Yi-yeon: Arousing interest is key. I noticed that when students were exposed to new material, they showed enthusiasm, especially when we incorporated games.
Kim Han-gil: "We use unique rules in the Koryo class to keep students engaged. For instance, if students talk too loudly, they must present something in front of the class as a form of penalty. I also want to give everyone a chance to speak so I sometimes ask questions.
Jo Eun-jeong: Since these are young students, I think the best way to capture their interest is to reward them. Many of them respond well to incentives like stickers and candy, so they actively participate when these are offered."
Q. Are there any teaching methods that you specifically consider for students learning Korean for the first time?
Seo Yi-yeon: While many students in my class are proficient in Korean, they are more comfortable with English. We focus on making the class feel accessible by understand student interests and strengths.
Kim Han-gil: I think it's important to hold classes in two languages and to be patient because I want all the students in my class to learn a lot. In particular, I try to make sure all students can participate so that they can absorb the language in their own way.
Kyeong-ae Lee: Since it is a Sejong course, there are many students who are comfortable with English. The students in the Sejong class also range in age, so I use quizzes and crafts to keep things engaging for everyone.
Q. Please tell us what you gain or feel rewarded from communicating with parents through open houses.
Cho Eun-jeong: I've seen a positive change in student behavior and attitude after open classes. Some students who were not as prepared for class have shown more effort post-open class.
Kyeong-ae Lee: I think the biggest postive is that the students show up for tests much more prepared than before. I think parents are aware of their children's strengths and weaknesses, so they can help their kids study in a way that suits them.
Kim Han-gil: I received an email from a parent expressing how they appreciated our unique teaching methods. This feedback made me realize how effective it is to teach with nuances, even when introducing a single word.
Parent Interviews
Q. What impressed you after participating in this open house?
Heungbu Class Parent: I really appreciated the opportunity to see my child's class firsthand. It gave me a better understanding of how the lessons were going and how my child is learning.
Silver Dokki Class Parent: I was impressed by the teacher’s dedication to teach korean. It seems like the teachers give a ton of effort
Q. Is what you learn at school applicable at home?
Dalnim Class Parent: Originally, he couldn't speak Korean at all, but now there are many cases where he proudly shows me the words and sentences he learned at Korean school. There's still a lot to learn, but it's nice to see progress already!
Heungbu Class Parent: When I was looking through my child’s homework, I was surprised that I used words from different languages. Our family speaks three languages, so it was nice to see my child learning diligently even though it was very confusing.
Q. Please let me know if there are any parts of the class that you would like to especially praise or that could be improved.
Heungbu Class Parent: I didn't know that my child would present the picture diary homework in class, but if I had heard first that there would be such a presentation, I think I would have been more prepared.
Dalnim Class Parent: Since some classes are combined, I felt that as the number of students increased, it was difficult for younger students like my child to participate. I think smaller class sizes can help with engagement.
Q. Have you ever felt that your child showed positive changes or grew through learning Korean?
Silver Dokki Class Parent: I think my child learned a lot while attending a Korean school. The process of learning Korean has helped him connect with his identity and Korean culture, which is really beautiful.
Heungbu Class Parent: I think Korean School has given our children many good experiences that enable them to preserve their Korean identities. This will help them continue to grow in the future.
Interview with Principal Nam-il
Q. What aspect of school education did you want to show to parents through this open house?
Principal Nam-il: I wanted to use the open house to highlight the excellence of our teachers and the quality of education at our Korean School. Unlike typical American schools where open classes are brief, the open house here allows for parents to get an in depth look at teaching plans and the progress of their children.
Q. Was there anything particularly memorable among the feedback from parents?
Principal Nam-il: It was very heartwarming to see that those who participated in the survey were satisfied with the education from Korean School. Many people praised the excellent teachers at Korean Language School, and many felt that the students' Korean language skills steadily improved each semester.
Q. I am curious what new educational programs you are planning for next year.
Principal Nam-il: We are currently considering expanding our curriculum by providing more bilingual classes and further subdividing some classes, such as adult classes and Sejong classes. We hope that this would cater to the diverse student body we have at New England Korean School.
