올해 2023년은 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교가 48주년을 기념하는 해이다. 부모님들이랑 학생들이 일찍 오면서 시작을 했다. 첫 날부터 카페테리아에서는, 학생들과 학부모들에게 김밥, 떡볶이 등 다양한 빵, 그리고 음료를 판매했다. 보조교사와 교사들의 도움 덕분해, 점심 전, 중, 후에 어떤 문제도 없이 첫 날을 진행할 수 있었다. 한 학부모는 “제 아이가 한국어를 배울 수 있는 한국적인 분위기와 안전한 환경을 가지게 된 것이 정말 좋습니다.”라고 말했다. 이어 신입생들도 선생님들의 도움으로 한국학교에 집중하고 학교를 쉽게 돌아다닐수 있다고 말했다. 한 교사는 “새로운 학생들이 와서 한국어를 배우려는 모습이 보기 정말 좋다” 라고 전했다.
첫 날 개학식 행사는 강당에서 애국가로 시작했다. 그에 이어 미국 국가 "Star Spangled Banner"도 다같이 불렀다. 한국학교 학생들 10명이 강당 무대에서, 그리고 보조교사 3명이 현악 3중주로 국가 반주를 연주했다. 이 후에 남일 교장은 무대에 올라와 새로이 시작하는 2023-2024년 학기에 대해 자세히 설명했다. 새로 부임한 김재휘 총영사가 축사를 하였고 한국어를 배우러 오는 많은 학생들을 보며 기뻐하고 앞으로 많은 지원을 아끼지 않겠다고 교사들까지 모두를 격려했다. 양원미 학부모회장은 학생들에게 격려의 말과 인사를 전했다. 또한 Linda Champion은 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 학생으로 다시 만나게 되어 반갑다고 인사를 하며 "언제든 저를 만나면 한국어로 인사해 주세요! 여러분 모두와 알기를 기대하고 있어요!" 라며 열정적인 모습으로 인사를 전했다.
개학식 사회를 맡았던 박현아 리더교사는 통역을 맡은 최서경 보조교사와 함께 각 과정 교사들을 모두 소개하고 학교의 규칙에 대해 설명했다. 가장 강조된 부분은 한국학교에서 한국어로만 말하도록 하는 것이었다. ‘우리가 지켜야할 10가지 수칙’ 을 읽은 후 개학식을 모두 마쳤다. 부모님과 아이들은 초코파이와 오예스 간식을 받고 집으로 돌아갔다. 이로써 한국학교의 개학식과 첫 날이 마무리되었다.
뉴잉글랜드 한국학교는 기초 준비 1&2과정, 기초 3&4과정, 초급1~3과정, 중급 1~3과정, 고급 1~3과정, 세종 1~6과정, 작문교육, 음악 및 문화교육, 오후특별교육과정과 보조교사회 및 교지 편집부로 구성되어 있다.
Opening Ceremony marks a lively start to the 2023 Fall Semester

This year, 2023, marks the Korean School of New England’s 48th anniversary. It began with an early arrival of students and parents. This first day, the kitchen provided a wide range of foods, like tteokbokki, kimbap, different kinds of bread, and drinks. Thanks to the efforts of the teachers and teachers’ assistants, the busy lunch period went smoothly. One parent even commented, “I love that my child has come to such a safe place to learn Korean.” New students remarked that they were able to focus and make their way through the class thanks to the help of their teachers.
The last event of the first day took place in the auditorium – a performance of the Korean National Anthem (애국가). This was followed by a recital of the “Star Spangelled Banner”. Both were sung and performed by the school’s student choir. Next, Principal Nam Il took the spotlight and gave a opening remark about the new 2023-24 school year. One of our special guest speakers, Mr. Jae-Hwi Kim, the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, gave a wonderful congratulatory remark, in which he expressed his joy seeing so many young Korean-Americans coming to learn Korean. The PTO President, Ms. Won-Mi Yang followed by giving her own speech to encourage the students and parents in the audience. Finally, our other special guest speaker, Ms. Linda Champion, lawyer and Vice President of the Korean-American Citizen’s League, gave another congratulatory speech, and ended passionately by saying, “Please say ‘Hi’ in Korean if you see me around! I’ll be looking forward to seeing you all!”
Ms. Hyun-ah Park and her interpreter, Sally Choi, introduced all of the teachers and staff, and explained the school’s rules. The most important rule, they pointed out, was to only try to speak Korean in Korean School. After the “Ten Rules We Must Keep” were recited, the opening ceremony came to a close.
