2022 PSAT로 인한 보조교사들의 빈자리: 어떤 영향을 미칠까?

2022년 10월 15일, 대다수의 뉴잉글랜드 보조교사들이 PSAT로 인해 학교에 참석을 하지 못했다. 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 보조교사들은 어떤 일을 하며, 그의 빈자리는 학교 선생님들께 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아보자.

이렇게 많은 인원의 보조교사들이 한꺼번에 빠지는것은 어떤 영항을 미치는지에 대해서 고구려반 주민정 선생님과의 인터뷰를 통해 좀 더 알아보았다. 우리 학교 보조교사들은 보통 복사, 교실 정리, 숙제 확인, 그리고 수업자료 준비 등의 역할을 하고 있으며, 점심시간 동안 학생들을 보살피고, 반 학생들 중에서 수업을 따라 오기 어려운 아이들 옆에서 수업을 도와준다. 또한, 점심을 카페테리아에서 먹는 기초과정과 초급과정에서는 보조교사가 학생들을 안전히 데려다 주고 데리고 오는 역할이 있다면, 점심을 교실에서 먹는 중급과정과 고급과정에서는 보조교사가 10분에서 15분 일찍 점심 시간을 갖고, 학생들과 담임 선생님의 점심 시간이 시작 될 때 교실에 돌아와, 교실과 학생들을 돌보는 역할이 있다고 한다.

이런 보조교사들은 담임 선생님과 같이, 또는 번갈아 가면서 교실을 지키고 학생들을 보살피는 것이 가장 중요한 역할이다. 보조교사가 교실에 있음으로 인해, 담임 선생님은 교실을 짧은 시간 비우더라도 안심할 수 있고, 수업을 따라 오기 어려운 학생들을 보조교사가 돌보아 줌으로써 담임 선생님은 여러 학생들의 수업활동을 볼 수 있는 큰 장점이 있다고 한다. 주민정 선생님께서는 보조교사 없이 가장 힘든점이 교실을 비워 둘 수 없다는 점이라고 이야기 하셨다. 담임 선생님은 점심시간까지 교실을 지켜야 하며, 수업을 힘들어 하는 학생들 옆에서 수업을 해야만 하는 어려움이 있어, 다른 학생들의 수업활동을 보기 어렵다고 한다. 고구려반은 뉴잉글랜드 한국학교 중급과정의 마지막반으로써 3학년에서 6학년 학생들로 구성되어 있다. 주민정 선생님은 보조교사의 유무에 따라서 수업 방식이나 순서 등이 바뀌지는 않고, 학생들이 자립적으로 수업 활동을 할 수 있어 보조교사 없이 아주 큰 어려움은 없다고 하시지만, 기초과정 또는 초급과정과 같이 학생들이 더 어린 반에는 보조교사가 필수일것이다.

뉴잉글랜드 한국학교의 반과 학생들의 나이에 따라 보조교사의 빈자리는 조금씩 다른 영항을 미치겠지만, 전체적으로 보조교사들의 빈자리는 선생님들을 수업활동 외 다른 부분에 더 많은 신경을 쓰게 하며, 보조교사의 역할과 그의 도움은 당연히 중요하고, 담임 선생님을 훨씬 더 편하게 해드린다고 볼수있다.

The Absence of Assistant Teachers due to the 2022 PSAT: What are its effects?

October 15th, 2022, the majority of the New England Korean School assistant teachers were unable to attend the school due to the PSAT. Let’s go discover the duties of the assistant teachers and how their absence affects the Korean school teachers.

We had an interview with homeroom teacher Joo-Minjung of the Goguryeo class to find out more about the impact of the absence of teacher assistants. The teacher assistants are usually responsible for printing papers, cleaning up the classroom, homework checking, preparing class materials, taking care of the kids during lunch, and also helping students who have difficulty keeping up with the pace of the class. In addition, in the case of the teacher assistants who have to help with the beginner classes, during lunch, they have to bring the students to the cafeteria safely and back. In the case of the older and advanced classes which eat lunch in their classrooms, the teacher assistants have to eat lunch 10-15 minute prior to the normal time so that they can take care of the students during lunch. This is because the homeroom teachers go out to eat in the normal lunch time while the assistant takes care of the remaining students in the class.

It is important that the teacher assistants and the homeroom teacher go back and forth each week taking care of the kids while the other eats lunch. Something important is that because the assistant teacher is with the students in the classroom, the homeroom teacher can feel relieved when she leaves her classroom, and also because of the assistant, the assistant can take care of the ones that have trouble keeping up with classes which is a major plus. Teacher Joo-Minjung says that the most difficult thing to do without the assistant teacher is when she has to leave the classroom due to something. In the absence of the assistant teachers, the homeroom teacher has to be in the classroom during lunch and also has to help students who are struggling personally which delays the classwork and decreases learning time for the other students. Class Goguryeo is the last middle class of a New England Korean school so it contains 3rd to 6th graders. Because teacher Joo-Minjung has an older class overall in class Goguryeo, she can do without the help of the assistant teacher most of the time, able to follow her schedule and do her activities as planned. However, for the younger classes, an assistant teacher is a must, she says.

Even though teacher assistants with different class rankings and class overall age can have slightly differing impacts than the other assistants, in general, the absence of them causes the homeroom teacher to do more work than the planned activities for the students; therefore, teacher assistants’ help are vital and can help make the life of the homeroom teacher more relaxed and comfortable.
